The interim Minister of the Economy, Irineu Darău (USR), declared on Monday evening that the meeting between the interim prime minister Ilie Bolojan and the president of the CCR, Simina Tănăsescu, was not a hidden one, but rather a “unfortunate coincidence”. He claims that, in his experience, such meetings cannot be hidden in the Parliament building.
“I think it was an unfortunate coincidence. On the other hand, one thing must be noted and it is factual. It was not a hidden meeting, I understand that it went past the press,” said Darău, to Euronews.
The minister stated that the situation could have been managed better, but he does not believe that the meeting could take place secretly in the Parliament.
“Maybe the situation was not handled perfectly, but I don’t think that in the Parliament building, from my own experience, you can hide any meeting. So I think that if someone wanted to meet secretly, they would do it differently.” he stated.
Darău added that the headquarters of the CCR is in a wing of the Senate and that, in his opinion, the final explanations must be provided by those involved.
“I know that the seat of the Constitutional Court is in a wing of the Senate, attached to the Senate (…) otherwise, I am convinced or hope that the two people involved, the prime minister and the lady judge, will give the right answers”said the minister.
At the end of last week, the press reported about a secret meeting of the PNL leader, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, with Simina Tănăsescu, the president of the CCR, in the office of the president of the Senate, the liberal Mircea Abrudean. The meeting was not officially announced and there were speculations that a possible topic of discussion was the Integrity Law, which was contested by PNL-USR, but also by President Nicusor Dan and which was to be discussed on Monday.
Simina Tănăsescu rejected “firm and categorical” any speculation regarding the discussion of the cases before the Court outside the strictly legal framework.
The High Court of Cassation and Justice (ÎCCJ), the Superior Council of Magistracy and the presidents of the appeal courts, tribunals and courts in Romania sent messages requesting clarification “immediate and complete” of the circumstances in which the meeting between the president of the CCR and the dismissed prime minister Ilie Bolojan took place.
The Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) sent, on Sunday evening, that the meetings of the president of the Constitutional Court with representatives of the executive authority are exclusively aimed at aspects related to the good organization, administration and development of the institution’s activity, within the limits of the competences provided by law.
For his part, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan had, on Monday, the first reaction regarding the meeting with the president of the CCR, Simina Tănăsescu: “A lot of times, they try to make a stallion out of a mosquito. We are in a case like this where this scheme is being tried.”
