President Nicușor Dan meets on Thursday, August 20, at the Cotroceni Palace, with the leaders of the former governing coalition, Sorin Grindeanu, PSD president, Ilie Bolojan, PNL president, Dominic Fritz, USR president, and Kelemen Hunor, UDMR president, to discuss the state of implementation of the PNRR projects under the terms of the August 31, 2026 deadline.
The interim Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, and the Minister of European Investments and Projects, Dragoș Pîslaru, will also be present at Thursday’s meeting, which will start at 2:00 p.m., the Presidential Administration reports.
The meeting takes place after the negotiations between the representatives of the Romanian Government and the European Commission on the topic of the new wage law ended without an agreement, and Brussels does not accept the current form of the project.
In the absence of a project variant that respects the conditions agreed with the European Commission, Romania risks not collecting the 770 million euros related to this milestone.
The European Commission is concerned about the impact of the new law on Romania’s budget. Brussels does not accept the options that would increase the wage envelope by 12 or 16 billion lei in 2027 without compensatory measures and also rejects phased increases.
Invited to B1 TV, interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan admitted that the form of the project sent by the Minister of European Investments and Projects, Dragoș Pîslaru, in Brussels raised a series of questions from the European Commission.
“Today a point of view came from the European Commission and, based on it, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Labor worked through their experts so as to re-sit the proposal. The European Commission did not reject the proposal, but they made certain observations and put some question marks and clarifications that are common sense. They are not forcing us, we are constrained.” declared Ilie Bolojan.
He adds that the law would put pressure on the budget, by increasing the salary fund and reducing investments, in the context in which the Government must reduce the budget deficit.
