A Romanian language teacher, with over 20 years of experience at the department, proposes a radical change in the way students get to high school. The teaching staff claims that the distribution according to residence could eliminate the differences between the high schools considered “good” and the “bad” ones, but also between them and the less sought-after educational units.
In a report for the educational website “La Tablă”, the teacher says that she has worked with several generations of students and believes that the education system is going through one of the most difficult periods in recent decades.
“I have been a teacher of the Romanian language for over 20 years and several generations of students have passed through my hands. I have caught all kinds of times, and the current ones seem the most odious to me. And no, I am neither nostalgic nor have political sympathies. I say it from the grassroots: more horrible than now has never been, from all points of view”the teacher said.
His message comes after heated discussions about the possibility of organizing an additional exam for high school admission. The teacher believes that the fears related to such a mechanism are justified.
“I wrote to you because there is intense discussion about this additional exam for admission to high school and all the debated arguments seem justified to me, especially since the corruption in the system has already been demonstrated, and all the fears that are taken into account are perfectly viable”it claims.
“Why must there be good high schools and less good high schools?”
Instead, the teacher proposes giving up the competition for certain high schools and introducing a distribution system based primarily on the residence of the students.
“I also come up with an idea that could simplify everything. Why must there be good high schools and less good high schools? Why not be admitted to the high school based on proximity, just as it is done with schools? That is, students should be automatically assigned to the high school, not according to their options, but according to their home addresses. If there are 2-3 high schools in the area, only then should options and specializations be taken into account. And the system’s concern to or ensuring the widest possible range of specializations in all localities, sectors, areas, etc.”, say this
Grades from the National Assessment, used for student progress
The teacher believes that the results obtained at the National Assessment should not be seen exclusively as a selection tool for high school.
“The National Assessment grades should be useful benchmarks for the student’s progress. They should show the current level so that each student can be helped to progress,” she states.
According to the proposal, such a change could diminish the differences between high schools considered “top” and those perceived as weaker. “Not only admission to high school would be fairer and more objective. There would be no more high schools and slum high schools.” supports the teacher.
In his opinion, the assignment of students to high schools close to home could also have effects on the traffic in big cities, where many parents transport their children to distant educational institutions every day.
