The Easter fast is one of the longest fasts, but also the harshest in terms of food. Doctors recommend fasting to people whose health allows it, as it can bring benefits to the body.

On Monday, March 18, 2024, the Easter Lent began, which will end on May 4, 2024. During this period, Orthodox Christians who fast do not consume foods such as: meat, cheese, eggs, milk and fish (there are also exemptions for fish) .

Galați doctor Alexandru Nechifor, specialist in internal medicine and gastroenterology, claims that this period can represent a “real breath of oxygen”especially for people who especially consume products rich in animal proteins.

In order to keep our immunity good during this period, when many viruses and colds appear, and immunity is lower, the doctor recommends a balanced diet.

“It's crucial to eat a balanced diet, get sun exposure for vitamin D, exercise regularly and get restful sleep. My advice would be to avoid stress, especially chronic stress, and to be aware that fasting does not only mean abstinence from animal proteins”claims doctor Alexandru Nechifor.

At the same time, it is important not to exaggerate in the consumption of food during the fast, and the quality of the food is essential.

“Also, we should be careful about excessive consumption of sugar-rich products, as they can have negative effects the body's immunity,” claims Dr. Nechifor.

According to the doctor, studies have shown that “a 24-hour fast, also known as a black fast, may provide some benefits to the body under certain conditions, such as improving insulin sensitivity and reducing inflammation.”
