A year ago, Alex Găvan, one of the most acclaimed Romanian climbers, initiated a project aimed at protecting the entire forest belt of Ilfov and around Bucharest. There are only two steps left for the laudable bill to become law.

And Tuesday March 19 is a defining day for the Bucharest-Ilfov Green Belt. The draft law aimed at protecting the forests of Ilfov, the cornerstone of the future green belt, will reach the agenda of the last committee in the Chamber of Deputies, the one for “agriculture, forestry, food industry and specific services“. The decisive vote will then follow in the plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies, the decision-making forum.
So far, at previous committees in the Chamber of Deputies, the decision-making forum, the project passed unanimously. More than four months ago, the project was adopted by the Commission for the Environment and Ecological Balance, after previously passing the Legal Commission.
Also, beforehand, the project was unanimously adopted in 2023 by the Senate and also unanimously passed its specific commissions.
The legislative initiative was submitted to Parliament by the “Together for the Green Belt” civic platform. The project was initiated by the Alex Găvan Foundation.
The initiators of the platform are Alex Găvan, high-altitude climber and conservationist, and Florin Stoican, president of the Kogayon and Văcărești Natural Park associations. Originally from Argeș County, Alex Găvan is one of the very few climbers on the globe who climbed seven mountains over 8,000 meters in the world without supplemental oxygen.
“These results were not a given, but were due to overcoming many challenges, although this public health project should be based on normality and a politically assumed vision of the long-term sustainable development of the capital and Ilfov. The Civic Platform Together for the Green Belt, bringing together under its umbrella over 150 organizations and public persons, appeals to the PSD President, Marcel Ciolacu, and invites him (constantly, since half a year ago) to join and sign the Memorandum for Clean Air, Health and Future, PSD being the only non-signatory party”says Alex Găvan.
The seven-point memorandum contains the draft law and solutions to pollution in Bucharest and Ilfov, as well as in other cities of the country.
Along with the representatives of the platform, representatives of the Ministry of the Environment, the Bucharest City Hall, the Ilfov County Council, as well as from the academic environment, will come on Tuesday, March 19 to support the project in the committee.
“The Bucharest-Ilfov Green Belt is a project that, in the current context of dramatic pollution in the capital, cannot be missing from the program and priorities of any serious candidate and any serious party in the upcoming elections and, at the same time, cannot be missing from personal assessment which each responsible voter does”adds Alex Găvan.
