The most popular messaging app on the planet will soon let you send messages to people who don’t even have the app, marking a major change for the platform, according to Metro.
The change comes as a result of the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, which stipulates that technology companies ensure interoperability between their apps and third-party apps.
Meta, which owns Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, says it hopes to offer other features like typing indicators, read receipts and more for all chats with third-party apps.
And those concerned about their privacy should feel relieved, as encryption will remain standard across all messages on WhatsApp.
It is believed that the changes could be introduced as early as 2025 for messaging, with video calling and phone capabilities coming in 2027.
