Part 1 of the concert will begin with La gazza ladra by Rossini

By the age of 20, Gioachino Rossini had already composed 28 works, including chamber and orchestral pieces, two masses and eight operas. five years later, La gazza ladra
it was his 22nd opera and his 61st composition. But Rossini’s work was no small task. Indeed, he was solely responsible for raising the artistic level of comic opera (opera buffa) at a time when the form had become obsolete. Also, with his serious works, he broke new ground in the opera form, soon to be followed by Giuseppi Verdi. In 1817, Rossini found himself at the crossroads between his comic and serious writings. La gazza ladraor The thieving sparrowis one of his last “comic” works, and its story is more tragic than humorous. The French writer Henri Stendahl, who would later publish a biography of the composer, wrote at the time that “Rossini composed five operas which he always copied; La gazza ladra it’s an attempt to get out of the circle.” The gamble paid off and the opera was a success both at its premiere that year in Milan and elsewhere in Europe.

It will follow Rinaldo
by Handel

Before his travels to Italy in 1706, Handel had shown little interest in opera as a genre. But a closer acquaintance with the Italian style soon made it his new preoccupation. He quickly made his mark again Agrippina (1710) was the work that put him on the map. In 1712, after several years of work and travel in Italy, Handel settled permanently in London. His success Rinaldohis first work composed specifically for a London audience, was an important factor in this move. First performed at the Queen’s Theater in London on 24 February 1711, Rinaldo it was an immediate success and was a major factor in starting a trend for Italian opera in London. Contemporary audiences praised the “charm of the music” and the “splendour of the performance”.

Time to enjoy Adriana Lecouvreur of Cilea

Love, mystery and a possible murder… nothing is certain in Adriana Lecouvreur, the most famous work of the Italian composer Francesco Cilea. Together with librettist Arturo Colautti, Cilea based his fourth and penultimate opera on the 1849 play of the same name, which in turn was inspired by the mysterious life and death of the 18th-century French actress Adriana Lecouvreur. Cilea’s lyrical creation has been beloved by audiences and cast members alike since its first performance in Milan in 1902, and still retains its place in the standard opera repertoire today.

Remember the unmatched Mephistopheles of Boito

The son of an Italian miniature painter and a Polish countess, Boito attended the Milan Conservatory and traveled to Paris on a scholarship. There he met Verdi, for whom, in 1862, he wrote the text of the National Anthem. When war broke out in 1866, he joined Giuseppe Garibaldi’s volunteers. While working at MephistophelesBoito published articles, influenced by the composer Richard Wagner, in which he vigorously attacked Italian music and musicians. Verdi was deeply offended by his remarks, and in 1868, when Mephistopheles was produced in Milan, Boito’s polemics provoked so much hostility that it was almost a riot. Consequently, the work was withdrawn after two performances. A much revised version, produced in Bologna in 1875, remained in the Italian repertoire. Among the several works based on Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Mephistopheles de Boito is probably the most faithful to the spirit of the play, and his libretto is of a particularly high quality.

Joy for the soul with Tosca by Puccini

Tosca it is a story of love, desire, murder and political intrigue. With Puccini’s richly romantic score, it is one of the most beloved operas in the world. In 1889, Puccini, barely 30 years old, set his sights on Sardou’s play, a heartbreaking melodrama about love and hate, passion and death, against the backdrop of a revolution. The play had been written for the French actress Sarah Bernhardt, who was probably the only person who could have successfully handled the intense drama of the role. Critics deplored the play’s violence, but audiences loved it, and Puccini was determined to create an opera based on it. Instead, Puccini’s publisher, Giulio Ricordi, obtained the rights for another Italian composer, Alberto Franchetti. Franchetti and librettist Illica began work, but gave up the project to Puccini for reasons that remain unclear. With its premiere in Rome, the opera was an immediate success with audiences, if not with critics for its extreme melodrama, and continues to be performed frequently.

Pure emotion with
At Wally’s by Catalans

At Wally’s is an opera in four acts by the composer Alfredo Catalani, to a libretto by Luigi Illica, first performed at La Scala in Milan on January 20, 1892. It was Catalani’s last opera. The opera is best known for the aria “Ebben? Ne andrò lontana” (“Well, then? I’ll go far away”, act 1, sung when Wally decides to leave his home forever). Maria Callas sang the role of Wally and let her soul flow into the music.

Tears and catharsis listening to the song Nessun dorma from Turandot

Giacomo Puccini’s last glorious opera, Turandothighlights the composer’s magnificent melodic effusions and reveals Puccini at his peak as a creator of orchestrations of exotic beauty. Turandot it is one of opera’s greatest blockbusters. The plot unfolds to music of extraordinary brilliance, including “Nessun dorma,” the most popular Italian tenor aria. Unfortunately, the composer did not manage to finish this work – he died in 1924. The end of the penultimate scene of “Turandot ” is the final material orchestrated by Puccini himself – he took the sketches of this scene with him to the clinic in Brussels. Italian composer of the younger generation Franco Alfano was commissioned to complete the work using the sketches. PREMIERE “Turandot
” was presented on April 25, 1926 at the “La Scala” theater in Milan, with the conductor Arturo Toscanini at the lectern. After Liu’s death, the stage master lowered his wand, turned to the audience and announced “here the play ends; here Giacomo Puccini stopped composing. In this case, death was stronger than art.” The curtain closed after his words.

Real sensations listening Andrea Chénier by Giordano

Andrea Chénier is a verismo opera in four acts by Umberto Giordano, to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica, first performed on March 28, 1896 at La Scala in Milan. “A total triumph. Twenty curtain-raisers for the artists and the master,” wrote publisher Sonzogno in a March 1896 telegram to announce the overwhelming success of the work Andrea Chénier for the librettist Luigi Illica, who had so skilfully transformed into a burning tragedy the true story of a French poet who had fallen victim to the French Revolution. One of the most intense opera scores of the 19th century, Andrea Chénier it was met with enthusiasm at its premiere in 1896 at the Teatro alla Scala.
