Jolie, who plays the late opera singer Maria Callas in director Pablo Larraín’s Maria, received an eight-minute standing ovation at the premiere on Thursday, August 29, at the Sala Grande Theater of the 2024 Venice Film Festival. according to people.com.
Jolie, 49, cried as the audience applauded after the film ended.
The Oscar-winning actress wiped away tears, briefly turning her face away from the crowd. She also hugged Larraín, 48, and her castmates as they basked in the audience’s affection for the film.

Before the screening, Jolie talked about how the role presented different challenges. The interpretation of the famous soprano gave him “the therapy I didn’t realize I needed,” she said at a press conference Thursday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“I had no idea how much I was holding back and not letting out,” she said. “So the challenge was not technical, it was an emotional experience to find my voice, to be in my body, to express myself. You have to give every bit of yourself.”
The film says “the tumultuous, beautiful and tragic story of the life of the world’s greatest opera singer, relived and reimagined during her final days in 1970s Paris.
Netflix has acquired the rights to the film, but a release date has yet to be announced.
