Romania would have officially announced to the allies that it is proposing Klaus Iohannis for the leadership of NATO, according to a post on the X platform by a US correspondent. The information is also supported by government sources cited by G4Media. The Government spokesman, however, refused to comment on the subject in a press conference.

“Romania has notified the other NATO members that it intends to nominate the country's president, Klaus Iohannis, as a candidate for the post of NATO Secretary General. It will complicate the effort of the other allies to install Mark Rutte as the next Secretary General,” Jennifer Jacobs wrote on X.
According to government sources cited by G4Media, incumbent Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who is considered the favorite in the race for NATO leadership, cannot garner enough votes due to opposition from allies on the eastern front, such as Bulgaria, Hungary, Turkey and Romania .
The next NATO Secretary General is expected to be announced at the NATO Summit in June.
The Presidential Administration, however, refused to provide an answer, arguing that “do not comment on rumours”, according to the cited source.
Previously, however, President Klaus Iohannis claimed, in a press conference in Cotroceni, that in the case of such a proposal, he would analyze the situation.
What does the Government say?
“I saw. There is a development of a topic this very afternoon about what will happen to the future Secretary General of NATO, who will occupy this position. At the moment, on behalf of the Government, I have no data to communicate on this topic”, explained the government spokesman, Mihai Constantin.
Asked who makes the nomination, the Government representative explained that “lat NATO level, as far as I know, decisions are taken unanimously, there are political discussions that do not go smoothly, especially since we are talking about this function, especially in the context we live in. We'll see. If we have public information about it, we will certainly be able to communicate it”.
