Firea rejects the accusations about the Mercosur Agreement: “PSD is not playing theater!” The MEP explains the vote in the European Parliament

PSD MEP Gabriela Firea rejects the accusations that the social democrats are playing theater in front of the farmers. She clarifies that on December 16, 2025, the EU-Mercosur Agreement was not voted on, but only a report on protective measures for farmers.

PSD MEP Gabriela Firea explained on Sunday, on Facebook, that the much-discussed Mercosur agreement was not voted on in the European Parliament, but only “the report on the proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council implementing the bilateral safeguard clause in the EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement and in the EU-Mercosur Interim Trade Agreement as regards agricultural products”.

Firea states that the Agreement itself will only be voted on in the second part of January and accuses USR and PNL of “a huge hypocrisy”, because they spread false information in the public space.

A few clarifications needed on the EU-Mercosur agreement and the project voted by me and the other PSD MEPs on December 16, 2025. The hypocrisy of the USR coalition colleagues is immense. They cannot lie, as long as we can prove the truth and fight for the interests of the Romanians. We did not vote for the agreement, but for measures by which farmers would be protected! You will see below which important clauses for farmers the USR MEPs rejected“, Firea transmitted.

What was voted, in fact

According to the social democrat, the report voted on December 16, 2025 called for additional protection measures for farmers, should the agreement be approved in January. “The EU-Mercosur agreement has not been voted on. The information spread by the USR and also by the PNL, that the PSD MEPs have already voted on the agreement and are now playing theater in front of the farmers, is false. The agreement will be voted on in the second part of January”. Nature pointed out.

The title of the report submitted to the vote was: “The report on the proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council implementing the bilateral safeguard clause in the EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement and in the EU-Mercosur Interim Trade Agreement with regard to agricultural products”.

Wirea also draws attention to the fact that the USR and a part of the PNL claimed that the PSD is playing a double game in front of the farmers, but she rejects these accusations: “Nothing more fake! I demonstrated that no agreement was voted, only future ones protective measures for farmers. But, USR better explains why the two Romanian MEPs, members of the Renew group, voted against the safety measures for farmers“, commented the MEP.

Among the measures rejected by the USR are: the definition of serious damage, the obligation of the European Commission to adopt safeguard measures in support of the affected farmers, the clause regarding the environment and health, the suspension of the agreement in the case of imports that do not comply with European standards and the consultation of farmers before the vote.

“The fact that USR ministers did not take into account the official position of my colleague Florin Barbu, the Minister of Agriculture, nor they did not discuss with the farmers before the voteit’s serious! The health of Romanians must be a priority, beyond short-term economic objectives. USR MEPs rejected crucial protection measures, as USR ministers mandated a vote for the agreement, without consulting farmers or taking into account the opinion of the Minister of Agriculture. If this is not a betrayal of Romanian interests eitherr”, said Firea.

The official position of Romania

On Friday, President Nicușor Dan announced that Romania voted, during the meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the governments of the EU member states (COREPER), in favor of the trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur states (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay), after negotiating additional elements to protect Romanian and European producers, especially in the agricultural sector.

The EU-Mercosur agreement creates the largest free trade area in the world, with almost 700 million citizens. The share of Mercosur imports in the EU’s annual consumption is small: beef – 1.5%; poultry meat – 1.3%; sugar – 1%; honey – 10%.
