The deputy general secretary of NATO, Mircea Geoană, declared, on Friday, in Râmnicu Vâlcea, that if he decides to run for the presidency of Romania, he will do so only as an independent, although he does not refuse the support of some political formations either.

“I do not avoid support from some parties. This is not the idea, but in essence I am absolutely determined if I am going to run, to run as an independent, because I believe that a president of the Romanian nation must represent all Romanians and all Romanians. You have no party color, and this fiction from the Romanian Constitution that a president belonging to a party, propelled by a party, arrives in Cotroceni and overnight turns into someone independent and above party interests is effectively a fiction and many times a lie. And it seems that it didn’t work either… That’s why I think there is a need for someone to work with the parties, but to represent everyone’s interests. For me, there are no Romanians, liberals, or Romanians or AUR or anything else. We are all Romanians. We all need to move forward, we all need Romania to be respected, we all need to be better represented abroad. That’s why I think we need someone who can be a president by the book, who respects the Constitution and represents all Romanians. And I think this is a political and historical necessity for Romania”, said Geoană during a press conference, writes Agerpres.
Mircea Geoană specified that he will decide on his candidacy for the position of president of Romania only at the end of his mandate at NATO.
“A little patience. My mandate at the top of NATO is coming to an end. It’s been five years since I’ve been doing this job. It was a very, very full, very complicated period, with the war in Ukraine, with withdrawals from Afghanistan, with the pandemic, with many, many problems and I am preparing to leave an important position with my head held high. I hope that the Romanians were also proud of the fact that one of ours has reached such a high level and I am preparing for the next chapter of my life. But, as I have said before, until the last day of my mandate I will do my duty there, and the day after I finish my mandate at NATO I will return home and I will communicate my decision and intention regarding to the next chapter of my life”added the Deputy Secretary General of NATO.
Mircea Geoană was on Friday, in Vâlcea, on an official visit that he made at the initiative of the Reborn Romania Movement, which announced that it supports his candidacy for the position of president of Romania.
On this occasion, Mircea Geoană presented his book to the Valceni supporters “The battle for the future of Romania. The thoughts of a Romanian at the top of NATO”, during a debate he held at the “Antim Ivireanul” County Library in Râmnicu Vâlcea.
