Netizens sent several negative messages to the post in which the Romanian president congratulated David Popovici for his performance at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

David Popovici brings the first Olympic medal for Romania at the Olympic Games in Paris! Congratulations, David, on this outstanding performance!

Come on, #TeamRomania!“, it is stated in the post made by the Romanian head of state.

Here are some of the comments from netizens:

I don’t know where this nonsense comes from to brag about athletes you didn’t support financially. The Romanian Lottery had to draw some lots, to collect 300 thousand euros for the athletes qualified for the Olympics! Shame!”

The credit goes to David and the huge investment from the parents. Those of you at the head of the state invested in specials and those senseless and unjustified salaries and those embarrassing increases. Congratulations David!

Go with low cost and donate the money from private planes for Romanian sport. Poor you”.

“You see that educated Romania harasses and abuses its female students. I think that should have been of more concern to you.

I am shocked by this quick reaction“.

“And what is your merit, chief? This boy wasn’t on vacation with you, he was in the pool training to make us proud. You? What have you done for the Romanians? I tell you: NOTHING!”

We remind you that David Popovici brought the first medal for the tricolor delegation, stunningly winning the 200 meter freestyle race at the Olympic Games.

The Romanian returned second at 50 meters, then third halfway through the race. But the ending was absolutely fantastic. In the last pool, the young swimmer recovered millimeter by millimeter and reached the finish line first, after one minute, 44 seconds and 72 hundredths. Only two hundredths ahead of the British Matthew Richards, which translated into a finger tip!

It is the first gold medal for Romania at Paris 2024, but also the first in history for a Romanian swimmer at the Olympic Games, in the male event. In second place was the British Matthew Richards, with a time of 1:44.74, while the Olympic bronze in 200 meters was awarded to the American Luke Hobson (1:44.79).
