Photo Romania outside the marked routes. Unknown places where you find the peace and starry sky

When the urban agglomeration becomes too much and the notifications leave no room for thoughts, there is a rare refuge: deep Romania, without signal, without paved roads, but with a sky full of stars and tranquility. We present some of the forgotten corners of the country, where you can sleep under the open sky, where you can hear local legends and taste life as it was hundreds of years ago.

Somewhere, away from the beaten roads of weekend tourism, Romania still retains the silent, raw, unpaved territories. There are those places where the phone signal disappears as if they never existed, where the paths do not appear on the official tourist maps and where people, if you meet them, offer you a cup of water. For those who seek radical disconnection, real tranquility and close to the essentials of nature, there are still in Romania some isolated territories, as wild, as friendly to the soul.

Latorita Mountains. A quiet without markings

The first place that demands attention – the Latorita Mountains, a discreet but impressive formation, located between the Parang Mountains and the Lotr Mountains, in Vâlcea county. The access is made from the town of Voineasa, climbing on a forest road that snakes among the wooded slopes to the Petrimanu accumulation lake. From here, the asphalt disappears, and with it and the signal. Another kind of travel begins, one on paths that climb the Oltețului Curmătura, on the edge of some gentle ridges and alpine pastures, with views that open wide to the Căpățânii Mountains. The meadows are sprinkled with isolated sheep, where the shepherds, if you have no misfortune to find only the dogs, receive you simply, without big words. The spring water flows cold and clear from the rock, and the mountain plates offer ideal space for camping. At night, the sky opens into vaults full of stars, and the silence, so deep that you hear your thoughts, becomes a landscape itself.

The area is ideal for light day or two hiking, with minimum luggage and orientation after physical map – Opentopomap or our offline mountains are essential. The routes are not marked, and the GPS is often useless. However, orientation is not difficult for those used to walking on the mountain: the peaks are wide, excellent visibility, and landmarks – lakes, rounded tips, sheep – are clear. From Curmătura Oltețului you can descend to Lake Galbenu or climb to Bora Peak. It all depends on how long you want to stay away from the world.

The locals in the villages at the foot of the mountains keep archaic traditions related to transhumanity: departures with sheep in the mountains are marked by local holidays, and the shepherds still use songs of dogs and dog calling, inherited from ancient times. It is said that in the serene nights, sometimes, you can hear the shouts of the mountains – strange sounds, interpreted as signs of the guarding spirits of the places. By Sânziene and Saint Elijah, the elders still light fires on the hills and tell legends about fountains that disappear and move according to the will of the mountain.

Tesna Valley. Wild keys and nights without light

Another space that impresses with its deep isolation is Valea Tesnei, a hidden jewel in the Cerna Mountains, part of the Domogled-Valea Cernei National Park. The climb starts near Motel Dumbrava, near Băile Herculane, and is made on a narrow path that enters the forest quickly. After no hour, civilization remains somewhere down, between the coils, and everything you have in front is the forest. The Tesnei Valley is one of the most spectacular keys in southwestern Romania, with vertical walls, abundant vegetation and a river flowing through a rock and greenery tunnel. As you climb, the path becomes wilder, until you reach the subalpine meadows, large places, molcoma, perfect for stretching the tent. Above, towards the Arjana Peak, the landscape changes again: the forests leave room for the rocks, and from the ridge there is a wide view to the Mehedinti Mountains and to Retezat.

Arjana is not a high peak – only if it exceeds 1,500 meters – but it is an insulated peak, which you rarely meet. The meadows are sprinkled with old halls, some abandoned, others used by shepherds only in summer. This is the place where you can stay one night without seeing any other light, without hearing than the whisper of the herbs and the bell of an animal. The water is present in several springs, but it must be sought carefully, especially in summer. On the map, the area appears as a white spot: without official routes, without markings, without cottages. It is a place for those who know how to orient themselves, but who want nothing but a quiet night under the open sky.

The elderly from the nearby villages still tell about the “goddess in Arjana”, a mythological protector of herds, which is shown on full moon nights. In the households of Cerna, habits are kept related to the living fire (lit by rubbing the wood in the night of the sânziene) and the rituals of protection of the sheep. The traditional port is still worn at the dedications and mountain holidays, and the local songs, served at the whistle, still accompany the roads of the shepherds. For Easter and Christmas, the families on the Cerna Valley light ritual fires on the peaks, and on the Great Thursday they are divided for the souls of the wandered in the mountains.

The meadows below the mountain. Myths and nature from Maramureș

The third place that is worth mentioning is not only geographically isolated, but also cultural, it is to be found under the name of the Poienile de Sub Munte, in Maramureș. Located on the border with Ukraine, this village is one of the largest in Romania, but the houses are scattered on hills and valleys, connected by land roads or old paths. From here start paths that climb the Maramureș Mountains, to almost mythical sheep, where time seems to have ceased. The climb is long, sometimes three to four hours, through frequent beech and spruce forests, but at his end he discovered a suspended world. The green plates are sprinkled with wooden huts, where cheese is still prepared according to old methods, and people only go up in summer, with flocks. Around – nothing. Only forest, sky, grass and mountain. There is no phone signal here, there are no social networks. There is, perhaps, a blanket on the hot grass, a wooden hob and an evening that lasts longer than elsewhere.

In the Poienile de Sub Mount, there is an old Ukrainian, and the wooden traditions are holy: each family has its own carved ornament model, and the wooden trout still pierces the paths. The carols and local hours are different from those of the rest of Maramureș, maintaining Slavic influences. It is said that in the forests of the area live the spirits of the ancestors, and the children are taught by the little ones to greet the cod when they enter it, “not to be lost.” By St. Andrew, the villagers anointed their gates with garlic, and on the eve of the New Year are still going with the living plow, pulled by adorned horses.

What do you put in your backpack when you leave the technology covered area

A hike in isolated places, where the signal is missing and civilization remains far away, it means more than just a walk – a small expedition that requires careful equipment and a healthy dose of responsibility. The backpack becomes your extension, and what you put in it makes the difference between a transforming experience and a risky adventure.

First of all, you need an ergonomic backpack and lumbar belt, with a capacity of 45-65 liters, depending on the duration of the trip. The total weight should not exceed 15-17 kg, and the weight division should be done with care: the heavy things close to the back, down-the balanced weight, up-the things you need quick access. The tent should be easy, but resistant to wind and rain – with soil foil and waterproof. On mountain nights, especially in summer late, temperatures can drop below 5 ° C, so a three seasons sleeping bag is essential. The insulating mattress – inflatable or thick foam – saves your back and body heat.

Equally important is hydration. The water sources are rare and uncertain, especially in the summer months. A portable water filter allows you to drink directly from the spring. In the absence of it, the purification pills or boiling water are mandatory. As for food, opt for light and consistent products: lyophilized food, protein sticks, nuts, cereals, small canned. A small primus with gas cartridge or a solid alcohol burner gives you the comfort of a hot meal. Do not forget a minimal set of dishes: metal cup, spoon, knife.

As for clothing, the rule is stratification: technical, polar t -shirt, waterproof jacket, light but resistant pants. A thermal blouse, a hat and a pair of gloves may seem excessive in summer, but they become gold in the cool nights in the ridge. Do not forget the thick socks and shoes with an adherent, already fruitful sole.

For orientation, a portable GPS with offline map, along with a laminated physical map and a compass are absolutely necessary. Not all areas have marked routes, and sometimes the paths disappear completely. The phone, even without a signal, can work as a flashlight, but do not rely on it – take a frontal front.

And, above all, add a survival blanket to the backpack, first-aid kit, patch, elastic bandage, sunglasses and sunscreen. Put in a slightly accessible pocket a few small-sense objects: a coffee pack, a natural soap, a pack of wet wipes, you may give them a shepherd and receive a piece of cheese or a story.
