Romania, among the European countries with the fewest women in Parliament

The representation of women in the national parliaments in the European Union reached 33.4% in 2024, marking an increase of 5.6 percentage points compared to the 2014 situation, according to data published on Friday by Eurostat.

Of the EU member states, the largest weights of women in national parliaments are registered in Sweden – 45.6%, Finland – 45.5%and Denmark – 44.7%, the Eurostat ratio shows.

In contrast, the smallest percentages of women in the legislative are in Cyprus – 14.3%, Hungary – 14.6%and Romania – 19.5%.

Thus, Romania It remains among the countries with a reduced representation of women in Parliament, being below the European average.

In the last 10 years, three EU states have registered major increases in the presence of women in Parliament. Specifically, Malta – growth with 14.9 percentage points, Latvia – growth with 13 percentage points and France – growth by 10.3 percentage points.

The presence of women in the government

In 2024, women held 35.1% of positions in the national governments of EU states, up 7.4 percentage points compared to 2014 (27.7%).

In the European Union, Finland stands out for the highest weight of women in the government, occupying 60% of leadership positions, followed by Belgium, where women hold 55% of government functions. Estonia and France also maintain a gender balance in the central administration, with a female representation of 50%.

In parallel, Hungary is the only country in the EU without any woman in the government, while in the Czech Republic, only 5.9% of the executive positions are occupied by women.

In Romania, In 2024, women held about 30% of government positions, in a significant increase compared to 20% in 2014.

In most EU states, the share of women in the government has increased considerably after 2014, the largest increases being registered in Belgium (+32.8 percentage points), Portugal (+25.7 percentage points) and Lithuania (+24.9 percentage points).
