Simion, a meeting attended by former Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă. The AUR leader wants an alliance with more than 30 political formations

George Simion announced that he had a meeting with 30 non-parliamentary political formations, going to announce “a common, democratic bloc” for the local elections. The former prime minister confirmed the presence, but emphasized that the party he leads will not participate in the elections and that the talks did not concern an alliance.

“Post-December Romania, in these 34 years, has never had such an attack on the Constitution, on the electoral laws and on democracy and, from my point of view, we no longer live in a democracy. That is why last night we had a meeting with 30 political parties and we are thinking of taking all the necessary, democratic, but extreme steps to block the current coalition. We no longer have institutions in the Romanian state, we no longer have the People's Advocate, we no longer have the Constitutional Court. The electoral legislation is not subject to a constitutionality check, as we have been requesting for three weeks. We are in the midst of a coup d'état”, claimed George Simion in a conference, according to Agerpres.

George Simion also emphasized that the possibility of AUR not submitting lists of candidates to the local elections is excluded. “We are almost ready to announce a common bloc, this time a democratic one, which will support the candidates with the best chances for mayors and county councils”, the AUR leader also said.

AUR advertises the large number of signatures required for registration in the elections

The political formation also sent a letter in which it claims the large number of signatures required for the registration of candidates.

“We protest against the huge number of signatures required to register in the elections. If we want to live in a democracy, then the number of 200,000 signatures to be able to run in the elections must be reduced. Romania is among the European countries with the largest number of signatures required to be able to run in the elections, a fact that prevents small parties and independent candidates from registering in the electoral race”. shows the letter sent by AUR.

In reply, the representative of REPER, Liviu Iolu, drew his attention to the vote given against a project that proposed reducing the number of signatures.

The initiative was rejected by the Senate at the end of 2022. AUR members then voted to reject the project, with one abstention also recorded. The project has not yet reached the Chamber of Deputies.

Viorica Dăncilă: Combining elections, a big disadvantage for small parties

Following the appearance on Facebook of several images from the meeting organized by AUR on Wednesday evening, former Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă confirmed for “Adevărul” her presence at the meeting, at which she showed that 39 political formations were represented, specifying that the subject of the discussions “had in mind the merger of the elections”.

“The fact that small parties, such as the party I lead, Nation People Together, do not participate in the elections, considering the merger with the local elections. This is a big disadvantage for small parties and we have agreed to make a joint letter outlining this. It wasn't about the alliance, it wasn't about other discussions related to the unification of the parties, but only about merging the elections”explained Viorica Dăncilă, stating that the NOI party will not participate in either the local or European parliamentary elections, but is considering supporting the candidates of other parties.
