A new digital system promises to radically change the way we travel by plane, using only the phone and facial recognition.
Digital permit could replace Boarding Pass and Pixabay Photo Check-in
International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the UN body responsible for the development of air policies, plans a radical reform of current rules for airports and airlines by introducing a “Digital Travel Permit”reports The Guardian.
It would allow passengers to store the passport information on their personal devices to use them on the trip. Changes could enter into force within three years.
Currently, passengers must make the check-in, either online or directly at the airport. Subsequently, they are issued a barcode permit with bar code, which is scanned several times at the airport, including at the boarding gate.
Passports charged on the phone
The new changes would make the boarding permits unnecessary and the check-in process. Instead, passengers will download on the phone an “Travel permit” As soon as a flight. It will be updated automatically in case of reservation changes.
Passengers will be able to charge their passports on the phone and will be able to go through airports using their face for verification. Instead of the manual check-in, which informed the airline about the passenger’s intention to fly, it will be automatically notified when the passenger arrives at the airport and his face is scanned.
Valérie Viale, product management director at the Tourism Technology Company Amadeus, told The Times that these changes are “The largest in the last 50 years”. She said: “The last major modernization was the introduction of electronic tickets to The beginning of the 2000s. The industry has now decided that it is time to move to modern systems, similar to those used by Amazon. ”
In order for these plans to become a reality, airports will need infrastructure investments, including facial recognition technology and systems capable of reading a passport from a mobile device.
“Many of the airline systems have not changed for over 50 years, because everything must be uniform and interoperable globally.”added Viale.
Security measures
The new technology could generate confidentiality concerns, but Amadeus said that it has developed a system by which passenger data is deleted within 15 seconds from each contact with a “Control point” -such as pre-drying gates.
And the way in which the delays and the connecting flights are managed could change. According to the new developing technology, passengers who lose the connecting flights for reasons that do not take on the phone automatically notification with the details of the new flight. Their travel permit will be updated automatically, and they will be able to get aboard the new plane without any other formalities.
“Currently, airline systems work in isolation”Viale explained. “The reservation system, at the opening of the check-in, transmits the data to the delivery system, saying: ‘These are my reservations, now you can process them’. In the future, everything will be much more fluid, and the travel permit will be dynamic.”
