The Senate passed a legislative initiative that allows patients to be accompanied by a person of their choice during labor and delivery.
The project was submitted by senator Ruxandra Cibu Deaconu and passed with an overwhelming majority, USR reports in a statement.
“The Senate vote is an important step in the direction of a medical system that is more attentive to the needs of women and respect for their rights. The initiative was built based on the experiences and concerns expressed by many women who signaled the need for a higher level of privacy, respect and safety in one of the most important and sensitive moments of life”the release states.
According to the cited source, the new provisions clarify and strengthen the rights of patients in maternity hospitals, especially in terms of privacy protection and the possibility of benefiting from the support of a chosen person during labor and birth.
Also, the project introduces additional guarantees for respecting the dignity and rights of patients during the entire period of medical care.
“I thank all those who contributed to this endeavor, the parliamentary colleagues who supported it, professional organizations and civil society representatives who came with valuable observations and proposals. I am especially grateful to the women who chose to share their experiences and talk about things that are not always easy to say. This project was built from dialogue, from real experiences and from the desire to take a step forward to respect the rights of patients in Romania”said Ruxandra Cibu Deaconu, secretary of the Health Commission in the Senate.
The Senate is the first chamber referred to. The legislative initiative now goes to the Chamber of Deputies for debate and final vote.
