The American diplomat who sent one of the strongest messages of support for Romania in the UN Security Council on Monday, June 1, after the drone incident in Galati, has an indestructible “blood” connection with our country. It is about Dan Negrea, representative of the United States at the United Nations, born in Romania and left for America during Nicolae Ceaușescu’s regime.

In his intervention on Monday at the UN, he stated that “The United States supports Romania and will defend every square centimeter of NATO territory”, his message giving a dash of confidence in the tense context generated by the violation of Romania’s airspace by a Russian drone, an incident resulting in two injured people.

Dan Negrea’s story begins in the years of the communist regime, in Bucharest, where he graduated from the Faculty of International Economic Relations within the Academy of Economic Studies and began his career as an official in the Ministry of Finance.

During that period, he was part of the official delegations sent by the Romanian authorities to Washington for negotiations regarding loans and financial agreements with institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. During one of these foreign trips, Dan Negrea, then 24 years old, made a decision that would completely change his life: he left the Romanian delegation and requested political asylum in the United States.

Today, after decades spent in America, he holds one of the important positions within the American mission to the UN.

According to the presentation published on the website of the United States Mission to the United Nations, “Ambassador Dan Negrea is the United States Representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Council and Alternate United States Representative to the General Assembly Sessions.”

The official biography, published on the institution’s website, shows that, in 2025, he was part of the political transition team of the Export-Import Bank of the United States, after previously, between 2021 and 2024, he led a think tank in Washington that he founded.

He also worked in the State Department during Donald Trump’s first term. He was first a senior advisor in the Secretary of State’s Office of Policy Planning, where he handled economic files, and later became special representative for commercial affairs.

Before entering the US administration, he built his career in the financial sector, where for more than 30 years he worked on Wall Street, both as an investment banker and as a private equity investor.

An archived version of his biography on the State Department website also provides some details about this period.

According to the document, “for three decades, Mr. Negrea was an investment banker and private equity investor in New York and Los Angeles.” During that time, he has worked with companies in almost all areas of the economy and helped raise more than $15 billion through various financial instruments, in public and private markets in the United States, Europe, Asia and Latin America.

The official biography also mentions that, in addition to the diploma obtained in Romania, he holds an MBA from Cornell University, one of the most prestigious institutions of higher education in the United States.

Over time, Dan Negrea has published books, reports and articles dedicated to foreign policy and is a member of the Order of Malta, a Catholic charitable organization present in many countries of the world.
