The great golfer Tiger Woods has been charged with driving under the influence of substances following a car accident in Florida.
According to the BBC, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office announced that the multiple Grand Slam champion was also charged with criminal damage and refusing to submit to a legal test.
Sheriff John Budensiek said Woods, 50, overturned his car after hitting a pressure washer on Jupiter Island on Friday.
The golfer, who had to be dragged out of the passenger side of the car, passed a breathalyzer test after the crash but refused a urine test. Authorities have confirmed that no one was injured in the incident which happened on Beach Road shortly after 14:00 local time (about 19:00 GMT).
Sheriff Budensiek stated in a press conference: “Investigators specializing in driving under the influence attended the scene and Mr. Woods was showing signs of impairment.
Several tests were done on him. He explained the injuries and surgeries he had and we took that into account, but detailed tests were carried out at the scene.
After the situation was established, he was arrested and taken to the Martin County Jail.
At the prison, but also at the scene of the accident, I had no suspicions that alcohol was involved, and this was confirmed.
Mr. Woods tested zero for breathalyzer, but when asked to take a urine test, he refused.”
Tiger Woods was also involved in a road accident in February 2021. The car suffered serious damage “after it overturned, with no other vehicles involved“, it is stated in a police statement.
The golfer was extricated from the car by firefighters, who used extrication equipment. After being removed from the wreckage of the vehicle, Tiger Woods was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance, the authorities investigating the accident said.
