Traian Băsescu, explosive statements about Peter Magyar: “He wants to take EU money, but keeps Orban’s policy”. What does he say about UDMR and Kelemen Hunor

Former president Traian Băsescu commented on Tuesday, April 14, the political developments in Hungary and the possible orientation of the future government from Budapest. He claims that the change of power will not bring major changes in Hungary’s domestic or foreign policy, except for the relationship with the European Union.

According to the former president, the main stake of the new power would be to access the approximately 17 billion euros suspended by Brussels. “It keeps almost everything from Victor Orban’s policy, less the position regarding the approach to the European Union where it is about 17 billion euros that were due to Hungary and which are blocked. At least for the sake of the 17 billion, he will harmonize his position with that of the European Union”, said Traian Băsescu, at B1TV.

Regarding Peter Magyar’s political profile, Băsescu claims that he does not significantly distance himself from Viktor Orban’s line.

“Magyar remains a separatist. He wants independence, he wants autonomy and only to take money from the European Union. He has made his positions clear: he is not for sending weapons to Ukraine; he is not for Ukraine’s access to the EU in a faster formula. So, we find Orban’s lines in Magyar’s positions“, said the former president.

Traian Băsescu also commented on the position of the UDMR leader, Kelemen Hunor, whom he accuses of unjustified optimism.

“Personally, I had no doubt that Viktor Orban would lose the elections. I knew the situation in Hungary, as well as our politicians. I am surprised by the ignorance and floating in the clouds of Kelemen Hunor who hoped that his favorite, Viktor Orban, would win”. Basescu said.

Băsescu was also asked about the possible effects on the UDMR of the change of power in Budapest. He suggested that there could be tensions and revelations about relations between the band’s leadership and the Hungarian government.

“I think it’s a little important. It’s their problem. Kelemen Hunor will have to be careful how he justifies the money he received from the Hungarian government, if someone asks him back. There are many things that were not clean in Viktor Orban’s relationship with the leadership of the UDMR, and they will probably come to light now.” concluded Traian Băsescu.
