ARCUB – Cultural Center of the Municipality of Bucharest, presents, during the period October 12 – November 122024the exhibition “Tudor Banuș Retrospective – Controlled Delirium”a memorable foray into the universe of the renowned artist Tudor Banuș.
The event offers the public the opportunity to discover the stylistic evolution of the artist, recognized for his unique combination of figurative realism and fantastic realism, as well as for collaborations with prestigious international publications such as Le Monde, The New York Times and Die Zeit.
exhibition “Tudor Banuș Retrospective – Controlled Delirium” will be open at ARCUB – Gabroveni Innin the halls Coloanelor, Lipscani and Gabroveniand sums over 100 papers representative from various stages of his career, including both iconic illustrations and lesser-known pieces. The themes addressed in his works, such as mythology, the fantastic and contemporary social realities, reflect an artistic depth that invites reflection on the complexity of life and the beauty of everyday life, bringing to the fore the paradoxes of human existence through a baroque and symbolic aesthetic. His style, influenced by Art Nouveau and various international cultures, explores modernity and social change in a manner that demonstrates a broad knowledge of art history.
“Tudor Banus accompanies humanity on its way to an inevitable apocalypse, while, from time to time, he has the strength to make us laugh. This is not the least of its diverse and disconcerting qualities.” – Jean-Luc Chalumeau, art critic.
The works of Tudor Banuș stand out for their perfect technique and rich imagination, which combines human, plant and animal elements in heterogeneous compositions, comparable to those of the 15th century artist, Hieronymus Bosch, whose works are characterized by an enigmatic style and imaginative. Artist Tudor Banuș investigates contemporary beliefs and myths, adapting to a constantly changing world, with a deep vision of the coherence and obsessions of today’s society. His art remains timeless, relevant in a postmodern, hurried and materialistic world.
The critic Alain Bosquet appreciated in 1980 that Tudor Banuș brings to the fore our fears and insecurities in a “carceral universe”, in which the earth becomes uninhabitable and the dangers come from ourselves. His art, a continually renewed baroque, represents a “miraculous antidote” to this hopeless condition. The artist’s obsession with the boundaries between the real and the unreal reflects the cosmic entanglement we experience, and his vision of the world is marked by a balance between precious, decadent and tragic elements.
Mircea Cărtărescu, friend and longtime collaborator of the artist, emphasizes that “Tudor Banuș’s art is a testimony that the masters still exist, still work, and that the perishable sphere we live in still revolves around them”. His exhibitions and illustrations had a major impact not only in artistic circles, but also on the cultural education of the public, strengthening his international reputation.
