It’s the last days of college registration, and young people are rushing to complete and submit their admissions files. At the University of Bucharest, the competition is intense, at the most sought-after faculties, 25 candidates fight for a place.

For admission to the 2024 faculty, there is fierce competition at the Faculties of Foreign Languages, within the University of Bucharest, especially at the Korean and Japanese departments, where 25 candidates are fighting for every available place. At the Faculty of Psychology, within the University of Bucharest, there is a ratio of 20 candidates per place, and at Marketing, 15 candidates are fighting for an available place.
“The more unusual, more exotic languages, Persian, Japanese, Korean, less in international circulation, but still sought after by students. The biggest competition is in Applied Modern Languages with 25 candidates for budget places, Information Technology with almost 20 candidates for budget places, Pharmaceutical Chemistry with almost 11 candidates, Ecology and Environmental Protection with almost 10 candidates and Psychology and Cognitive Sciences by almost 10″said Bogdan Oprea, spokesperson for the University of Bucharest, according to the Observer.
Last year, the Faculty of Psychology was the leader in preferences, with almost 40 candidates per place. In second place is programming, with high demand for Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Bucharest, Automation and Computing from the Polytechnic, and Cybernetics from ASE.
“We have become an IT hub in the European area and I think leaders in the Eastern European area. The most sought-after department here is the computer department, where the competition exceeds 15 per place. Salaries have become attractive, 5,000-10,000 lei for a young student and the sky is the limit”, stated Mihnea Moisescu, dean of the Faculty of Automation and Computers.
The best faculties
The Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Bucharest continues to be one of the most sought-after options by graduates, along with Psychology, Law and Mathematics-Informatics. The university has opened registrations for over 19,000 places, and the number of registered candidates has already reached 30,000, according to TVR Info.
“Usually, they focus on professions that have a clear opening on the labor market. We are happy that overall, according to the analyses, graduates of the University of Bucharest are the best paid graduates in Romania.“, commented the university professor. Marin Preda, rector of the University of Bucharest, according to the quoted source.
The question on the lips of the young people who took the Baccalaureate this year is “Which faculty should I choose?”, and the decision can be influenced by several factors. While some choose college based on the salary they would earn working in the field of study, others want to learn about their passions.
A record number of candidates is also registered at the Faculty of Medicine in Bucharest, with 3.7 candidates per place in General Medicine and 4.3 candidates for admission to the Faculty of Dentistry. The annual fee for studies in Medicine and Dentistry is 15,000 lei.
“The number of candidates is the highest in recent years. We believe that our University, in addition to the prestige it already had, has grown in image, the professions we train are particularly attractive professions, employability is high, the human side, the side of being at the service of those around you, of having taking care of their health is a very important argument.“, pointed out the university professor. Hit the seats at ASE
At the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest, just a day and a half before the closing of registrations, 9,000 graduates have already submitted their files. The greatest competition is registered at the Faculty of Cybernetics, where there are more than 2,000 candidates for 950 places, and at the Faculty of Law, with 450 candidates for only 150 places. For the first time, the entrance exam resumes after more than ten years in Cybernetics, and the Faculty of Law introduces the entrance exam for the first time in its history.
“We wish not to lose so many more along the way. Let’s select them early so as to reduce this degree of abandonment.”, explained the ASE rector, university professor Dr. Nicolae Istudor.

However, college is no longer a priority for many high school graduates. Last year, 450,000 students started college in Romania, compared to almost 538,000 in the previous academic year. Romania has the lowest percentage in the EU of people with higher education, only 17.4% in 2022, according to Eurostat.
