“Long and frequent debates, the key to great successes. I propose the first debate in the middle of Bucharest, at Piața Romană, to debate the abolition of sectors and Ilfov County, the future former Ilfov County. (…) Let’s debate, let’s not “run” from debates, let’s be with them, with each other, not in the party headquarters”sends Vlad Gheorghe in a video message on Facebook.

The debate could take place on Thursday, from 20:00.

The independent candidate says he will accept any other debate, but on one condition: “I accept any other debate, in the places and formats chosen by the other candidates, as long as they are open to the public.”

Who is Vlad Gheorghe?

Vlad Gheorghe is a lawyer and attended the Faculty of Law at the Romanian-American University in Bucharest, which he finished in 2008. He enrolled in the master’s degree in 2017, at the University of Bucharest.

But he got to the European Parliament taking a seat left vacant on the lists of the former USRPLUS, when Clotilde Armand withdrew to take over the mayor’s office of Sector 1. His mandate from the party didn’t last long either. Vlad Gheorghe resigned from USR in February 2024, following a scandal in the party. The leadership of the formation denied him access to the Political Committee of the Union, accusing the MEP of having debts to the party. However, he claimed at the time that he was kicked out of the event because he opposed the alliance with the PMP and Forza Dreptei.

Vlad Gheorghe also ran as an independent candidate for a new MEP mandate, but he failed to get the necessary votes, but a score of 2.41%. For a place in the European Parliament, he would have needed 3% as an independent.
