What happens to the Holy Light of Jerusalem in case of force majeure. “It was kept here continuously lit as a precaution”

The bringing of the Holy Light from Jerusalem, scheduled for Holy Saturday (April 11, 2026), will take place in the same way as every year since the inauguration of the tradition, in 2009. However, the Patriarchate also took force majeure into account, giving details on how to proceed in this last case.

The tradition of bringing the Holy Light from Jerusalem was inaugurated in 2009 by Patriarch Daniel and will be continued this year as well, state the representatives of the Romanian Patriarchate. The event is scheduled to take place on the evening of Saturday, April 11, 2026. Father Archimandrite Ioan Meiu, the superior of the Settlements of the Romanian Patriarchate at the Holy Places, is the one who will bring the Holy Light from Jerusalem, after which it will be offered to the delegates of the dioceses of the Romanian Patriarchate, present at the “Otopeni” International Airport. “Later, through the dioceses, the diocesan centers will distribute the Holy Light to each parish within them”, specify the BOR representatives.

Also on Saturday, April 11, the Holy Light will be received at the Patriarchal Cathedral “Saints Constantine and Elena” by His Beatitude Father Patriarch Daniel.

“There are all the prerequisites for the Holy Light to be brought like every year”

The event of bringing the Holy Light to the country and offering it to all places of worship within the Romanian Patriarchate “represents a powerful symbol of communion and ecclesial unity, as well as an expression of the Easter joy occasioned by the great feast of the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ”the Patriarchate also transmits.

“At this time, there are all the prerequisites for the Holy Light to be brought like every year, however, taking into account the current geopolitical situation, marked by the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, its bringing can be affected only in a case of unforeseen force majeure”, however, I take into account the representatives of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

In the latter case, which would represent a “totally undesirable and impossible to anticipate situation”the Holy Light from Jerusalem will be offered from the historic Patriarchal Cathedral “Saints Constantine and Helena”, on the Hill of Joy, “since the Holy Light brought from Jerusalem in the year 2025 was kept here continuously lit in a special candle, as a precaution”, also shows the Patriarchy.
