What Mircea Geoană thinks about Viktor Orban’s visit to Russia: “With or without visits, the political conditions for a political solution have not been met”

Before the NATO summit in Washington this week, which, by the way, marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the most powerful security organization in the world, Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană commented on the recent visit of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to Russia.

The critical comments regarding the initiative of the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, to undertake a “peace mission” and hold discussions in this regard with Vladimir Putin, without having any mandate from the European Union, have not ended.

Mircea Geoană, in his capacity as Deputy Secretary General of NATO, explained, however, that such actions will in no way affect the unity of NATO leaders nor the decisions regarding the support given to Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion, reports Antena 3.

“We will continue to go in the direction of supporting Ukraine. What an ally does nationally does not commit NATO. It is not a mission that has the turn or sanction of allies. It is a political subject.

The press and the international community comment on them, but in no way do such gestures affect our unity. We will continue to be tough on Russia because, unfortunately, Russia and the leadership from the Kremlin au chose a long-term policy of aggression towards Western democracies.

They transformed their state, economy, foreign policy, defense system into a logic of confrontation with the West. They see the West and NATO as their adversaries. We are not their opponents.

As soon as Russia ends this conflict and returns to normal behavior, we will be interested in entering into a dialogue.

With or without visits, the political conditions for a political solution have not been met”, declared Mircea Geoană.

Regarding the topics that will be addressed during the summit in Washington, he specified that it is about the general security situation and the strengthening of defense in the Black Sea area, the increase in defense production and, obviously, the support for Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.
