A new trend on TikTok claims that a shot of olive oil taken before a night of drinking helps prevent hangovers, but not all health experts are convinced it works, the New York Post reports.
This trick has been around for decades, but it took off in April when music producer Benny Blanco tested the theory with American host Jimmy Fallon.
“My friend Nino taught me this. Some old people from Italy came and said “Blanco explained on the show “The Tonight Show”
He claimed to have tested the technique before and it gave positive results.
“Was it the worst shot? Yes. Did it work? Yes. Would I do it again? Maybe”he also said.
The argument behind the Mediterranean myth is that olive oil, which is rich in healthy fats, coats the stomach. Foods high in fat can slow down the process of emptying the stomach and delay the absorption of alcohol.
About 20% of the amount of alcohol consumed is absorbed into the blood through the stomach, while the rest reaches the small intestine, where it is absorbed more quickly.
Many experts, however, believe that there are better options when it comes to getting rid of a hangover.
Several dietitians told People magazine that hydrating with water, coconut water, or electrolyte drinks is the best way to prevent headaches after a night of drinking.
