Video “Damian & Brothers” celebrate 20 years and launch a manifesto project with great artists

In an anniversary concert marking two decades of existence, “Damian & Brothers” not only celebrates a band’s longevity, but also the cultural impact they have had. Behind the scenes of the show, time seems compressed: rehearsals follow each other with pressure, decisions are made hastily, and the tension increases as the moment of the debut approaches. Behind every detail of this event lies the story of a musical history that moved the Roma tradition from the margins to the center of contemporary culture.

In 2006, in Bucharest, Damian was looking for the right musicians for a still unclear vision, but with a defined direction. Meeting the fiddlers who would become the core of “Damian & Brothers” was a founding moment. Since then, Roma music ceases to be perceived only as an expression of community, nostalgia or identity ornament, becoming a living, electrifying and contemporary presence.

The first rehearsals, recordings and public appearances, followed by European tours, captured not only the rise of a band, but the emergence of a new cultural language. At a time when Romania was preparing to enter the European Union, “Damian & Brothers” represented the country abroad, transforming music into an instrument of visibility, dignity and confrontation with prejudices. “What had been born from an artistic intuition was beginning to take on the scale of a phenomenon”, explains Damian, according to Click!.

Success and perspective change

With the release of the films “Magdalena” and “Romaniac”, the band entered the consciousness of the general public. The success was massive, but the real stake was not in the numbers. “The real stake is the change of perspective”says Damian. Music that was once marginalized has entered the homes, emotions and imaginations of a wide audience, proving that a cultural root can regain strength not through preservation, but through courage, exposure and reinvention.

“Gypsy Rock (Change or Die)” – manifesto project with famous artists

The band did not stop at the achieved success and entered a stage of continuous transformation. Through brave fusions, Roma music entered into dialogue with pop, rock, urban and electronic. From this tension was born “Gypsy Rock (Change or Die)”, a manifesto project made together with artists such as Smiley, Andra, Delia, Loredana Groza, Ștefan Bănică, Dan Bittman, Feli, Lora, Grasu XXL, Connect-R, DOC, Carbon and Zdob and Zdub.

The same force of expansion carried them to Cuba, where Damian spent a month with Romanian violinists. Cuban rhythm, improvisation and musical memory have dialogued with the fiddle tradition, giving birth to the “Gypsy Cuban” project, a new stage where Roma heritage meets the vibrant energy of Cuban music.
