The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Țoiu, had a telephone conversation with the Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, in which the main security challenges at the international level were addressed, as well as the development directions of the bilateral relationship between Romania and the USA.
“I had a telephone conversation last night with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio about current security challenges and the future of our bilateral relationship. Our cooperation on deterrence and defense is more relevant than ever, supported by a trusted and long-standing Strategic Partnership. We placed particular emphasis in our conversation on security, economic development and the shared priorities that will guide our high-level meetings this year.” transmitted Oana Țoiu.
During the discussion, the two officials explored possibilities for deepening cooperation in areas considered strategic, such as defense, energy, technology and critical minerals, as well as strengthening people-to-people ties between the two states.
“Together we explored ways to deepen cooperation in strategic areas: defense, energy, technology and critical minerals, but also strengthening interpersonal ties. The relationship between our countries is a pillar of stability not only bilaterally, but for the entire region. We reaffirmed Romania’s active contribution to Allied coordination on the Eastern Flank and our desire to increase the economic component of the strategic partnership“, said Țoiu.
Another important point of the conversation was the finalization of the agreement on the MECEA program and the launch of the Romania-United States exchange program, considered a concrete step in strengthening cultural and educational diplomacy.
“We also welcomed a new concrete step in our relations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the State Department finalized the formal agreement for the MECEA program and the launch of the Romania-United States Exchange Program. The first delegations of the US Congress will arrive in Romania by the end of this year. We supported the importance of this educational and cultural exchange program because diplomacy means presence and direct knowledge. We want the members of the US Congress and American specialists to discover our universities, the dynamism technology entrepreneurs in Romania, civil society initiatives and our expertise in security and energy.”, the MFA minister also specified.
