The former president of PNL Valeriu Stoica declared on Saturday, May 2, that “PSD offensive” is not against Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan but against “a possible change in the way of doing politics in Romania”. He appointed the president Nicușor Dan “Hope-Mythic in Romanian politics”.
“The PSD offensive is not against Ilie Bolojan. The PSD offensive is against a possible change in the way of doing politics in Romania. Only on the surface it seems that the PSD guns are aimed at Ilie Bolojan. No. The PSD guns are aimed at the idea of changing the political course in Romania.
What Ilie Bolojan wants to do is not something related to his person, what Ilie Bolojan wants to do and what he wanted to do during this period is to change the way of doing politics at the national level, as he demonstrated that it is possible to change the way of doing politics at the local level“, said Valeriu Stoica, on Saturday, at Digi 24.
He added that if “The PNL accepts to coexist with the PSD even after this crisis, which means that it actually wants to continue the way of politics done so far” and if he does that, then the statement that the PNL will become a kind of annex of the PSD is fulfilled.
Valeriu Stoica says that the PNL must separate itself from the PSD in order to regain its identity and political relevance, warning that there will be an internal battle in the party regarding the strategic direction.
Valeriu Stoica, about PSD and AUR: “However, one speaks, the other believes”
Also, the former PNL president talks about a possible informal understanding between PSD and AUR behind the censure motion.
“The version that PSD says and the version that AUR says, in the public discourse. However, each one speaks, another believes.
PSD says: “We want to restore the alliance with PNL, USR, UDMR”. AUR says: “We want early elections”. So they make a no-confidence motion together, publicly declaring that each wants something else.
In reality, there are speculations and I think they are justified about an agreement between PSD and AUR. I don’t think PSD would have started this offensive against Ilie Bolojan if there hadn’t been minimal coordination with AUR. Even if it is denied, even if we will never have problems in this regard. But you know that the discussions are done discreetly, you don’t always know about them”, said Valeriu Stoica.
He believes that, if the motion passes, it is no longer possible to restore the governing alliance.
“The PNL, in the situation it is in today, if it were to participate in a new government with the PSD, risks further diminishing its political weight and there are even greater risks than that. So if the motion passes, the normal option related to political logic is to have a PSD-AUR government and have PNL and USR in opposition.”

However, Valeriu Stoica says that “it remains to be seen what UDMR will do”, which is likely to switch to the opposition.
“I believe that the PSD plan is not to strengthen the PNL, but the PSD plan was to remain in government, to continue extracting the rents, if it is not possible with this coalition that has been so far, to form a new coalition that will allow the further extraction of rents from the Romanian economy”said the former liberal leader.
Valeriu Stoica: “Nicușor Dan is a Mythical Whoopa in Romanian politics”
Valeriu Stoica says that Nicușor Dan cannot play political games because he does not have a party behind him and, in addition, he is a “solitary” politician, used to acting on his own.
“I have made predictions about his political career over time and every time I said: Sir, he has no chance in politics because he is a solitary player and politics is a team game. Every time my predictions were refuted.
Nicușor Dan is a Mythical Hopa in Romanian politics. You put it away, it gets up, you put it away, it gets up. It remains to be seen whether this principle of survival will save him further. I’m not making a prediction anymore.”
The former PNL president says that Ilie Bolojan could not do much more under the current conditions: his firm style was leading him to a deadlock anyway, and the limits come from the fact that he does not have a strong enough party nor enough technical expertise in the government.
“The administration in America might even welcome the formation of an AUR-PSD government”
Regarding international reactions, he said that the first reaction will not be favorable, especially from the European Commission, which may take the hardest position, while the US may even welcome the formation of such a government.
“If an AUR-PSD alliance is to be formed, the first reaction will not be very good. But, now, what reaction are we referring to? From the European Commission? Maybe here things will be the harshest. But let’s look at the fact that there are other forces in Europe, not only those that we call democratic.
After that, let’s look at the United States. How will the reaction be? I don’t think there will be a harsh reaction or there won’t be a negative reaction from the current presidential administration. If there will be an AUR-PSD government… the administration in America might even welcome the formation of an AUR-PSD government,” anticipates Valeriu Stoica.
