Kelemen Hunor pleads for the restoration of the pro-European PSD-PNL-USR-UDMR-minorities majority and warns that early elections would increase political instability and favor the rise of extremism.
The president of the UDMR, Kelemen Hunor, believes that the early elections are not a solution for the current political crisis and claims that the priority of the parliamentary parties must be to restore a pro-European majority capable of ensuring the stability of the government.
In a message published on Facebook, the leader of the Union commented on the political situation in Bucharest after the fall of the Government led by Ilie Bolojan, accusing PSD and AUR of jointly contributing to the overthrow of the Executive.
“Many people asked what is happening in Bucharest. In short: PSD and AUR together overthrow the government led by Ilie Bolojan. However, they did not solve a problem in this sense, but created a new one. It is well known that it is easier to overthrow the government than to lead the country”, he written by Kelemen Hunor.
The leader of the UDMR drew attention to the economic risks generated by political instability, especially regarding the implementation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. According to him, Romania is at a critical moment, and delays may lead to the loss of important funds from the European Union.
“Time is not on our side. 116 days left until the PNRR closes and if we fail to make progress, we will lose EU resources. We are talking about billions – money that will be missing”, he warned.
Kelemen Hunor reaffirmed the position of UDMR in favor of restoring the pro-European coalition formed by PSD, PNL, USR, UDMR and representatives of national minorities. He stated that this option must be analyzed before any other form of government.
“We made it clear to everyone the position of the UDMR at the recent meetings. First of all, we need to check if the previous pro-European majority will be able to form again: PSD, PNL, USR, UDMR and the minorities”, the leader of the Union sent.
In his opinion, the future Executive needs a prime minister with professional authority and political credibility, capable of managing the current crisis.
“We need a professionally trained prime minister-candidate, politically credible and able to face the political and governmental crisis”, also wrote Kelemen Hunor, who pointed out, however, that a minority government is not an ideal formula, but could be accepted in the current political context.
“Although, in general, a minority government is not a stable solution, it is acceptable in the current situation”, explained the UDMR leader.
At the same time, Kelemen Hunor categorically excluded any political association with AUR.
“It is clear to us that where GOLD is present, we are not there,” he pointed out.
The president of the UDMR argued that extremist parties should not reach the government and pointed out that the organization of early elections would increase political tensions and uncertainty.
“Early elections are not a solution. (…) Anyone who encourages early elections increases uncertainty and opens the door wider to extremists”, he said.
Finally, the leader of the Union conveyed that the responsibility of overcoming the current crisis rests with both the president and the parliamentary parties.
“Now, the president’s task is to find a solution that ensures a stable government and does not make Romania vulnerable to extremist forces. The task of the parties in the coalition is (…) to put the interests of the country first”, transmitted Kelemen Hunor.
