A weekend in Valea Prahova, in Brașov or Predeal. Or a week at sea, in Mamaia or Neptun. These are scenarios known to many Romanians. However, Romania has dozens of spectacular places that do not appear on the classic tourism lists and are not suffocated by visitors. Away from the crowded resorts and well-known trails, there are spectacular gorges, alpine lakes, wild beaches and waterfalls hidden in the mountains.
The Nera gorges, wild nature and a lake with water of an unreal color
In the southwest of the country, Cheile Nera is considered one of the most spectacular canyons in Romania. Here you’ll find deep turquoise waters, trails through dense forests and impressive rock formations. The route becomes memorable once you reach Ochiul Beiului Lake and the Beușnița waterfalls, where the water seems almost unreal clear.
Best time to visit: May – October, when the trails are accessible and the water is deep turquoise.
Lake Bucura, the largest glacial lake in Romania
Hidden in the heart of the mountains, Lake Bucura is a gem of alpine nature. Located at over 2,000 m altitude, it is surrounded by spectacular peaks and is part of the Retezat National Park.
The area is only accessible on foot, making it much less crowded than other mountain destinations. It’s the ideal place for multi-day hikes and wilderness camping.
Best time to visit: June – September, when the snow has completely melted and the mountain trails are safe

Cheile Turzii, limestone walls and spectacular trails
Just a few kilometers from Cluj, Cheile Turzii offers one of the most accessible, but still quieter compared to other tourist areas, canyons in the country.
The limestone walls rise dramatically on either side of the Hășdate Valley, and the hiking and climbing trails are extremely popular among nature and exercise lovers.
Best time to visit: April – October, for safe trails and pleasant temperatures.

Bigăr waterfall, one of the most spectacular waterfalls
Bigăr Waterfall is a special place because of its unique “water dome” shape that pours over the green moss.
Even though it has become more popular in recent years, the area around the waterfall is much less crowded than other famous tourist attractions, and the nearby trails are quiet and spectacular.
Best time to visit: Spring and early summer when the water flow is higher.

Lolaia waterfall, the gateway to Retezat
In the Retezat National Park, Lolaia Waterfall is one of the most accessible and yet less crowded waterfalls in Romania.
The road to it is short, but spectacular, through coniferous forests. It is also the perfect starting point for longer routes in Retezat.
Best time to visit: May – October, for more spectacular flow, comfortable temperatures for hiking and more accessible trails.

The Bicaz Gorges, spectacular and well-known, but with quiet areas
The Bicaz Gorges are well-known, but if you deviate from the main road, you can find extremely quiet stretches with huge rock walls and less frequented trails.
The nearby Red Lake completes the mountain experience perfectly.
Best time to visit: May – October. In this range, there are several activities, the conditions for photos are excellent and the road is safe.

Corbu beach, wild coastline and total silence
If we move to the coast, Corbu Beach is one of the last beaches almost untouched by mass tourism.
There are no big springs, music or sunbeds for miles. Just fine sand, sea and peace. It is the perfect place for camping and spectacular sunsets.
Best time to visit: July – early September for good weather and warm water.

Vadu Beach, pure nature between the sea and the delta
Very close to Corbu, Vadu Beach is even more isolated. It is reached on an unpaved road, and the lack of infrastructure makes it one of the most authentic experiences on the Romanian coast.
It is frequented more by those looking for total silence, nature photography or camping directly on the beach.
Best time to visit: End of June – beginning of September.
