On May 23, Cristian Mungiu won the Palme d’Or at the Film Festival, with the film “Fjord”a drama inspired by a true case, which has sparked strong reactions from both audiences and international critics. It is the second Palme d’Or in the career of the Romanian director, after the success achieved in 2007 with the film “4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days”.
Cristian Mungiu received for “Fjord” four trophies: François Chalais Prize, Prix de la Citoyenneté (Citizenship Award), Ecumenical Jury Prize and FIPRESCI Prize (International Critics’ Prize).
“Fjord” marks Mungiu’s English-language debut and is his first film since 2022’s RMN. The new project explores the story of a Romanian-Norwegian family settled in an isolated community near a fjord in Norway. At the heart of the action is a couple played by actors Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, who face the intervention of social services in a tense case related to raising children and the limits of parenting.

“There is no money either in the production budget of the film or after, to promote this film. Some films are produced, but they have minimal impact, because there are no exploitation sites, there are no distribution budgets”said the well-known director.
He hopes to garner support from the private sector for the film’s campaign “Fjord”automatically selected in the Oscar race thanks to a new Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rule. According to him, a real Oscar campaign requires a budget of “between 5 and 10 million euros”an amount impossible to cover from Romanian funds. But the movie has “the strongest distributor for this kind of film” and is supported by actors who can participate in promotion.
