The crisis caused by South Korea’s premature elimination from the World Cup continues to have strong effects. At the center of the scandal is the former selector Hong Myung-bo, who was caught in the last hours at the airport, preparing to leave for the United States.
Visibly affected by the events of the last few days, the technician tried to avoid the attention of the public and the media. According to information published by sportal.bg, Hong Myung-bo was subjected to a wave of death threats after the failure of the South Korean national team in the final tournament, and the situation would have prompted him to leave the country out of fear for his own safety.
Nightmare comeback in South Korea
The return of the South Korean delegation after elimination from the World Cup turned into an extremely difficult moment. Hong Myung-bo and some of the players arrived at Incheon airport on Tuesday morning, hoping to avoid fan backlash after the failure in the final tournament.
The plan didn’t work though. Dozens of fans awaited their arrival and expressed their displeasure with boos and protests. The pressure on the former coach grew even more after he tendered his resignation just a day after being eliminated.
Hong Myung-bo was criticized including by the president of South Korea, and several supporter groups demanded that he never coach in the country again. The situation became even more serious after the appearance of death threats against the former selector, a case that is still the subject of an investigation.
