Maia Morgenstern and Diana Sar change the rules of the story in “Don Quixote”, a show where theater meets live music

On July 15, Sala Radio in Bucharest hosts one of the most unusual productions of the summer: “Don Quixote”a show that brings theater and live music together in a contemporary reinterpretation of Miguel de Cervantes’ masterpiece. Tickets are available on Eventim.

There are stories that stand the test of time precisely because each generation finds in them other questions. “Don Quixote” is one of them, and the new production signed by String Theory proposes a different perspective on the famous knight and his faithful companion.

In a surprising turn of events, Maia Morgenstern plays Sancho Panza, while Diana Sar gives life to Don Quixote. The choice changes conventions and offers the audience a new key to reading the relationship between the two characters, turning the dialogue between idealism and realism into a contemporary reflection on courage, fragility and the power to keep dreaming.

The show doesn’t just follow the thread of Cervantes’ novel. The dramaturgical construction also crosses the universe of Mikhail Bulgakov, and the music of the symphonic poem Don QuixoteOp. 35, by Richard Strauss, becomes an integral part of the story. He is not a mere accompaniment, but a character in his own right, complementing the emotion and dramatic tension.

On stage, the music is performed live by a chamber ensemble made up of Theodore Andreescu
(violin), Constantine Borodin (cello), Iulian Popovici (rape) and Verona Maier (piano). Together with the actors, they build a universe permanently on the border between reality and imagination.

The direction belongs to him Marcel Topknown for its theater productions, opera and musical performances presented both in Romania and abroad. The mounting also marks the launch String Theorythe new cultural platform developed by Origins Events, dedicated to projects that explore the meeting between theatre, music and literature.

For Maia Morgenstern, the role of Sancho Panza means the reinterpretation of one of the most famous male characters in universal literature. Alongside her, Diana Sar proposes a vulnerable and deeply human Don Quixote, moving away from the classic image of the eccentric knight and bringing him closer to the sensibility of the contemporary audience.

Maia Morgenstern is one of the most important actresses of Romanian theater and film, with a career spanning over four decades and memorable roles both on the Romanian stage and in international productions. Diana Sar is known to the public for her work in theater and film, but also for her roles in television productions, being appreciated for the naturalness and intensity of her interpretations.

“Don Quixote” will take place on July 15, 2026from the hour 20:00at Radio Hall from Bucharest. Tickets can be purchased online Eventim.
