Three cases of West Nile virus infection have already been confirmed, and one of the patients died, according to doctor Tudor Ciuhodaru. He warns that infectious disease doctors expect an increase in the number of cases.
“Do not neglect mosquito bites. They can become lethal“, warns the doctor.
According to him, there are five warning signs that require a presentation to the emergency room: high fever accompanied by intense headache, vomiting, altered general condition and increased sensitivity to light, appearing two to eight days after the mosquito bite.
Ciuhodaru states that there is no specific treatment for West Nile virus. In the forms of medium severity, which appear, according to him, in one out of five cases, patients can present fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle and joint pain, urticaria and, rarely, lymphadenopathy. The condition may improve after about seven to ten days.
How infection can be prevented
The doctor recommends avoiding mosquito bites, especially between sunset and sunrise, when most species are most active.
People are also advised to use insect repellent on exposed skin and to wear long-sleeved clothing, long pants and socks. Permethrin-based substances should not be applied directly to the skin.
Ciuhodaru also recommends using insect nets and checking their integrity, as well as eliminating places where water pools around homes or in the basements of buildings, to limit the breeding of mosquitoes.
90% of infected people show no symptoms
The main way of transmission of the West Nile virus to humans is the bite of mosquitoes, and the virus is not transmitted through physical contact, such as touching or kissing, the doctor also states.
According to him, about 90% of infected people show no symptoms, and the manifestations of the disease can vary from cold-like symptoms to signs of meningoencephalitis.
One in 150 infected people develop severe symptoms, and the risk of serious illness and death is higher in people over 50 or those with immune deficiencies.
The symptoms can persist for several weeks, and the neurological effects can be permanent, warns Tudor Ciuhodaru.
