One of the most spectacular destinations in Greece risks being suffocated by the large number of tourists. Cretan authorities are preparing an hourly access system to the famous Balos Lagoon to protect one of the most fragile coastal ecosystems.
The proposal was developed by Kissamos City Hall and submitted to the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy. The pilot plan provides for limiting access to the protected area to a maximum of 1,200 people for each three-hour interval.
According to the project, after the expiration of the reserved period, the tourists would leave the area so that the next group of visitors could enter. The goal is to reduce congestion and protect the natural habitat of the lagoon.
Access would be digitally monitored
The system proposed by the authorities would work through a digital platform that would track in real time the number of people in the area. Reservations by boat tour operators and land tourist access will be synchronized to avoid exceeding capacity.
“Nature can no longer bear this pressure”warned Giorgos Koukourakis, special advisor for environmental issues of Kissamos City Hall.
He explained that the main problem occurs especially in the afternoon peak hours, when a very large number of visitors arrive at the beach at the same time, causing the gradual degradation of the coastal ecosystem.
Balos, one of the natural jewels of Crete
Balos Lagoon is one of the most famous attractions of the island of Crete, appreciated for its turquoise water, white sand and spectacular landscapes. The area is part of the European network of protected natural areas “Natura 2000”, which requires special measures to preserve the environment.
Local authorities claim that some recently adopted measures, such as the removal of vehicles near the beach and a significant reduction in the number of commercial sunbeds, have contributed to better management of the area.
However, local government officials say they do not have enough legal powers to impose restrictions on visitor numbers themselves.
Authorities warn that time is limited
Giorgos Koukourakis argues that central government intervention is needed to enforce strict rules and warns that there is a short window of time to make decisions before environmental degradation becomes irreversible.
According to him, the next two years are essential for the introduction of measures to protect the natural area in the long term.
If the system is approved and works in Balos, the authorities plan to extend it to Elafonisi, another popular destination in the southern Chania region, affected by the rapid increase in the number of tourists.
However, the plan is not enthusiastically received by all representatives of the tourism industry.
Travel agencies and local operators warn that organizing fixed visiting intervals could be difficult, especially for international tours, hotel guests and solo travellers.
Some operators propose establishing days dedicated to large travel agencies, for a more efficient distribution of the flow of visitors. However, managing tourists who arrive without a reservation remains one of the main challenges.
