World vice-champion and European boxing champion Lăcrămioara Perijoc reacted after, following an interview in which she appeared, several people commented on her physical appearance and wondered if she was “a boy or a girl”. The athlete talks about the years of work to have such a body, about the prejudices that still accompany women who practice sports considered masculine, and about how easily we come to judge a man only by his appearance.
“Am I a boy or a girl? I saw that, from all the interview that appeared with me yesterday, for some, the biggest dilemma was only one: “Is it a boy or a girl?” Let’s clear up the mystery. Dears, I’m a girl”, says Lăcrămioara Perijoc in a video published on TikTok.
The athlete presents herself on the platform as world vice-champion and European champion and talks about the mental preparation of athletes. In his message, Perijoc responds to comments about his musculature and physical features, which he puts in the context of years of work and performance sports.
“These muscles you see are still mine. It’s just that I chose to play a sport that is still considered a man’s sport, or, I got this comment, ‘a naked man’s sport’. Yes, maybe I have some features that some would call masculine, like, I don’t know, short hair, better developed muscles.” she clarifies.
“I didn’t build myself like this overnight”
Lăcrămioara Perijoc says that physical effort has been part of her life since childhood: “But I want you to know that I didn’t build myself like this overnight. I built myself like this through years of work. In the beginning, I worked in the fields, doing chores around the yard, because I grew up in the country.”
Later, performance sports shaped both his body and the way he related to his own abilities.
“And later on, I started to build and hone myself like that in the gyms during the performance years that I chose to do. Yes, I’m strong, I’m independent, I’m confident, I can do things that I don’t think a lot of guys can do. And I’ve noticed that sometimes that’s what makes people uncomfortable.”she confesses.
“We judge a man only by his cover”
Beyond the comments that prompted her to post the video, the athlete talks about the tendency to draw conclusions about others based solely on what we see: “But my dears, joking aside, I find it interesting how quickly we can judge a man by his cover alone, without knowing or making an effort to see who he is, what he has lived, how much he has worked, what character he has, what he can offer the world.”
As for herself, she says she doesn’t have a problem with the way she looks or the woman she’s become.
“I, for one, am fine with myself. I love the damn woman I am, I love my style, I love the body I’ve built, I love my character,” she points out.
Boxing, Perijoc also says, not only built his body, but also contributed to the man he is today.
“And most of all, I love the person this sport has made me into, and I love damn what I do. So if all this stuff makes you wonder if I’m a boy or a girl, that’s fine. I sleep very well at night, you know.” complete this.
“Let’s at least have the curiosity to open the book too”
Lăcrămioara Perijoc says that she chose to publicly discuss the comments received precisely so that the message does not remain only at the level of online replies: “Maybe next time, before we judge the cover, we at least have the curiosity to open the book. (…) Let’s each try to be better, because, frankly, I don’t think it costs us anything.”
