The General Mayor of the Capital, Ciprian Ciucu, announced on Tuesday, after leaving the court, that he will contest every time the measure of judicial control ordered in the DNA file in which he is being investigated for bribery. The mayor claims that the action also has a symbolic meaning, because he considers himself innocent.
“It is my right to do so. Every person in my situation challenges judicial review. It’s just normal. I consider myself innocent and that’s why, together with my lawyers, I appeared before the judge and asked for the lifting of judicial control”, stated Ciprian Ciucu.
Asked if he presented new arguments compared to the previous attempt to lift the measure, the general mayor said that he will continue to address the court as long as judicial control is maintained, writes Mediafax.
“First of all, if I didn’t do this gesture, I would plead guilty. I chose to do this gesture on a symbolic level as well. So I will do this gesture every time and I will challenge the judicial review”said Ciucu.
The first appeal filed by the general mayor against the judicial control was rejected on June 24 by the Bucharest Court. The court then maintained the measure ordered by the DNA.
“There are people who stayed eight months, one year, two years”
Ciucu says that he does not necessarily expect a quick lifting of the measure and cited the long duration of judicial controls in other cases.
“Usually, such things last in Romania. I mean, they usually extend. Look, there are people who spent eight months, a year, two years or more in judicial control and in judicial control harder than mine“, said the mayor.
He specified that the obligation to report to the police does not significantly affect his daily schedule, as he goes in the morning and then continues his work at the Capital City Hall.
Instead, Ciucu claims that restrictions on travel outside the country represent a problem for the exercise of the mandate.
“I am a member of the Committee of the Regions, I have to go to Brussels and I have to be able to fulfill my function. Obviously, this situation is not at all likely to help me do that”declared the general mayor.
The DNA officially announced that Ciprian Ciucu is being investigated for bribery for acts allegedly committed during the time he was mayor of Sector 6. Prosecutors claim that two businessmen would have offered advertising and electoral consulting services aimed at his political and electoral support, in the context of administrative procedures regarding a real estate project.
The investigators state that the said benefits would have been related to Ciucu’s attributions in the procedures for the urban planning certificate and the building permit. The mayor-general denies the allegations.
“I can’t give any more statements at this time, I’m not allowed by the prosecutor. When it goes to court, if it goes to court, then you will know my version, the one that is true“, Ciucu said on Tuesday.
