Residents of a large city in the south of the country were left without heating for over 30 hours on Tuesday evening, due to a breakdown in the energy installations, announces the producer of the municipality’s heating agent.
The supply to normal parameters will be resumed in the city of Craiova on January 22, 2026, at 00:00, but more distant areas could receive heat later due to the distance from the power plants.
“Supply at nominal parameters will resume on 22.01.2026 at 00:00. Due to the size of the primary heating network and the different distances at which the thermal points are located from the power plant, it is possible that in the more distant areas (neighborhoods) of the city, the temperature provided for in the temperature regulation diagram for the continuous delivery regime will be reached later”announced on Tuesday evening, Electrocentrale Craiova SA
This is the sixth major heat outage this year, each lasting more than 24 hours.
Mayor Olguţa Vasilescu declared that Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan refused to allocate the sum of 350 million lei for the necessary repairs to the energy groups. The lack of investment led to the failure of the network, affecting both the residents and the car manufacturer Ford, which depends on the plant’s thermal energy, according to Agerpres.
The press conference was also attended by presidents of owners’ associations, who requested the Government to allocate 50 million lei for Electrocentrale Craiova. The Mayor emphasized that the City Hall cannot invest in a company that does not belong to it:
“This plant belongs to the Government of Romania and not to the City Hall. Repairs can only be carried out by the Government. The Minister of Energy previously requested 350 million lei for repairs to the energy groups, the purchase of three reserve CAFs and the payment of part of the company’s debts. Mr. Ilie Bolojan considered that this investment is not important, although the plant annually supplies 100 Megawatts and provides energy for Ford, the second car manufacturer and tax payer in Romania.”, said Olguța Vasilescu.
The mayor also specified that, due to the lack of funds, for the first time in the last 30 years, no repairs were made at Electrocentrale Craiova, which led to repeated interruptions in the supply of heating agent.
