A Moldovan woman and her Italian husband turned the promises of “spiritual purification” into a nightmare. Followers were blackmailed, totally controlled and forced to pay huge sums while the group’s leaders sexually exploited vulnerable members.
A Moldovan woman, the “Mistress” of a sect that has shocked Italy, and her Italian husband have been arrested after Italian authorities discovered the extent of the abuses they perpetrated on followers of the group they led. Tatiana Ionel and Alfredo Mangone promised “purification of the soul” and spiritual evolution, but in reality they had turned this promise into a total control mechanism, reports the Italian press.
Followers were subject to a strict regime, where the hierarchy was divided into roles such as ‘Master’, ‘Mistress’, ‘Shaman’ or ‘Healer’, meant to impress and manipulate. Vulnerable people were spiritually and psychologically blackmailed, forced to pay huge monthly sums to “advance spiritually”, and the funds raised were used by the leaders for luxury cars, jewelry and extravagant meals.
The investigation started with the father of a follower
Four people – three men and one woman – were detained in Perugia, accused of forming an organized criminal group, fraud, blackmail and aggravated sexual violence.
The leaders of the group sexually exploited the most fragile members, under the pretext of purification rituals. Some of these rituals involved macabre simulations, drastic bans on family contact, and even the consumption of controversial substances, designed to strengthen followers’ loyalty and addiction.
The absolute control over the life and liberty of the members has turned the “spiritual association” into an abusive structure, difficult for those caught in its webs to leave.
The investigation began in 2023, after the father of a young man alerted the authorities, signaling that his son had entered the circle of an alleged “alchemy master”.
In a few months, the young man abandoned his job, exhausted his savings and severed all ties with his family, moving first to the province of Pesaro-Urbino and then to Umbria to live with the group.
Hierarchy and psychological control
According to investigators, the sect operated with a rigid hierarchy and pompous titles such as “Master,” “Mistress,” “Shaman” and “Healer.” These roles were designed to attract vulnerable people and manipulate them through recruiting techniques, keeping them captive through spiritual blackmail and threats to their fate and health.
According to the publication Il Messaggero, the leaders of the group were the 56-year-old Italian Alfredo Mangone, “The Master”, and his wife, Tatiana Ionel, originally from the Republic of Moldova, “The Master”. The two had given themselves spiritual titles and sacred names: Mangone called himself “warrior of light” and chose the holy name Kaar Yampui, and Tatiana Ionel called herself Mamas Nua Janua, declaring that they were “not human”, but “close to God” and even “divinities”.
The leader of a religious sect wanted to marry his own daughter
The investigation revealed that followers were persuaded to pay considerable monthly sums, estimated at a total of more than 500,000 euros, for a “path of spiritual evolution”. In reality, the money was used by leaders for personal purchases: luxury cars, jewelry, top hotel stays, and extravagant dinners.
Rituals and abuses
The accusations against the sect leader include sexual coercion, which, abusing the emotional vulnerability of a member, forced her to have intimate relations under the pretext of a ritual necessary to “save the soul”.
Within the sect, followers were pushed to cut all ties with family and friends, being warned of “very serious spiritual repercussions” or “negative consequences for seven generations” if they disobeyed the rules.
“If someone was in mourning, they wouldn’t even allow them to go to the funeral, lest they become contaminated. They make you live in a state of intense submission.” Also, the amount of donations influences the “spiritual level”: “The more you donate, the more you advance in spirit”, a former follower told a show.
The group’s rituals were presented as stages of purification or reaching a higher spiritual level, including simulated burials in pits covered with wood and leaves, maintaining intimate relationships, and drinking bodily fluids, including the leader’s seminal fluid. Followers were psychologically manipulated through spiritual promises and threats into following strict rules.
The Moldovan woman and her husband remain behind bars
The Perugia prosecutor’s office ordered the preventive arrest of the three located members, and extradition procedures are underway for one member who is abroad. Two other collaborators with minor roles are being investigated at large.
Mangone collected most of the donations for courses in alchemy, spiritual transmutation and shamanism. The monthly financial flow of approximately 12,000 euros covered personal expenses of the leader and his wife Tatiana Ionel, such as travel, computers, jewelry and food for the ex-wife.
The farm in Pietralunga, the current headquarters of the sect after the move from Cagli, had been purchased for over 500,000 euros, paid in full by four followers in a single week.
“Cut out your tongue. I can find you anywhere, I’m worse than a mobster,” Mangone allegedly told a victim who had paid 100,000 euros and offered him several cars, including a Porsche.
Fearing arrest, Mangone and Tatiana Ionel reportedly planned to flee to Switzerland after some victims filed complaints, including one who suffered a serious health incident during a shamanic ritual.
On Thursday, prosecutors determined that Alfredo Mangone, Tatiana Ionel and the “witch doctor” Antonio Accomando remain in custody, while Deputy Prosecutor Laura Reale continues the investigation into the entire structure of the “Conoscenza e Libertà” sect, in which a total of six people are being investigated.
