American actor Jeremy O. Harris has been released after three weeks in prison in Japan

The American actor and playwright Jeremy O. Harris, known for an appearance in the series “Emily in Paris” and for a successful play, was released after three weeks in prison in Japan, where he had been detained on suspicion of drug trafficking.

“He was released on December 8. I sent the file to the district prosecutor’s office in Naha”, specified Tetsuya Shimoji, head of the police in Okinawa, for AFP, quoted by Agerpres.

Caught with less than a gram of amphetamine

Jeremy O. Harris, who played a fashion designer in the Netflix series, was detained at Naha airport customs on Nov. 16 with 0.78 grams of a substance containing MDMA (amphetamine) hidden in a bag, Shimoji explained.

Asked by AFP, a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office declined to comment on the case, and it was not known on Wednesday whether Harris had been allowed to leave Japan pending the investigation.

The 36-year-old actor had arrived in the southern prefecture of Okinawa from Taiwan after leaving the UK, according to local station RBC.

Japan has some of the strictest anti-drug laws in the world, and possession of illegal narcotics carries heavy prison sentences.

Harris’s piece “Slave Play” (2018) received a record 12 nominations for the Tony Awards, the most important honors in American theater.

Jeremy O. Harris is also a co-producer of the popular HBO series “Euphoria.”
