BEC decision: Iohannis can run for parliamentary elections on the lists of a party, without being a member

The Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) decided on Friday that the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, can run in the 2024 parliamentary elections, regardless of the fact that Parliament approves or disapproves of the bill drafted by the PNL.

According to the BEC decision, a person can run on the party list without being a party member, but will not be considered an independent candidate.

In translation, President Klaus Iohannis could have run for the parliamentary elections in December on the PNL list without resigning from the position of President and without joining the party.

The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, announced on Friday that he will not resign and will not run for parliamentary elections in December, regardless of the BEC’s decision.

“As I have stated on several occasions, I will finish my mandate as President of Romania on time and I will not resign from my position. I will not run in the parliamentary elections in December, regardless of the decision that the Central Electoral Bureau will adopt today. I did not support and do not support the amendment of the electoral legislation in favor of a single person”President Klaus Iohannis announced on Facebook.

The leaders of the PNL senators and deputies submitted a bill last week that would allow the Romanian president to run on a party list as an independent without renouncing the last part of the presidential mandate.

The PSD and the opposition representatives announced that they do not support the liberal amendment.
