Bucharest is preparing to host one of the most anticipated cultural events of the beginning of 2026. The “Balanchine’s Legacy” International Ballet Gala will take place on February 11, from 20:00, at the Palatului Hall, and promises a unique show, with world-class artists coming for the first time in Romania.
The gala is dedicated to George Balanchine, considered “pAmerican Ballet Stars” and one of the defining figures of 20th century dance. The event offers the Romanian public a direct encounter with the neoclassical style that radically changed the way ballet is understood, emphasizing musicality, clarity of movement and pure expressiveness of the body.
The show will take place on February 11, from 20:00, at Sala Palatului, and the organizers recommend that the public arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of the performance.
World-class ballerinas, for the first time in Romania
On the stage in Bucharest will be prima ballerinas from world-renowned companies such as New York City Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Houston Ballet and Royal Danish Ballet, all present for the first time in Romania.
Guest artists include New York City Ballet’s Sara Mearns and Tyler Angle, Paris Opera Ballet’s Hannah O’Neill and Germain Louvet, Milan’s Teatro alla Scala Virna Toppi and Nicola Del Freo, Houston Ballet’s Karina González and Angelo Greco, and Royal Danish Ballet’s Caroline Baldwin and Alban Lendorf.

What will be danced on the stage of the Palace Hall
Sara Mearns and Tyler Angle will perform “Diamonds” and “Cortège Hongrois,” two pas de deux that highlight the defining contrasts of Balanchine’s creation, from the purity of form to the pomp of imperial tradition.
Hannah O’Neill and Germain Louvet will bring audiences “Who Cares?” and “Sonatine”. To the music of George Gershwin, “Who Cares?” combines the jazz and energy of Broadway with classical elegance, while ‘Sonatine’, set to the music of Maurice Ravel, explores the refinement and delicacy of the French style. Together, the two moments capture the artistic dialogue between America and Europe, essential in Balanchine’s vision.
Virna Toppi and Nicola Del Freo will perform “Emeralds”, to the music of Gabriel Fauré, a tribute to the French school of ballet. Considered a landmark of the Balanchine style, the choreography demands technical perfection, artistic maturity and nobility of movement. The couple’s premiere in Bucharest, in an extremely demanding repertoire, is described as an exceptional event for the Romanian scene.
Karina González and Angelo Greco will present “Rubies”, to the music of Igor Stravinsky, a work full of energy and modern spirit, and “Theme and Variations”, to the music of Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, which brings back the pomp and elegance of classical ballet. The two moments illustrate the duality of Balanchine’s creation, between classical rigor and contemporary freedom.
Nordic sophistication will be represented by Caroline Baldwin and Alban Lendorf, who will dance the “Apollo pas de deux”, created in 1928 to the music of Igor Stravinsky, a work considered the birth of modern ballet. The two will also perform Balanchine’s 1960 Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, a supreme test of technique and expressiveness that blends classical elegance with modern energy.
George Balanchine, the choreographer who changed the history of ballet
Born in 1904 in St. Petersburg, George Balanchine trained at the Imperial Ballet School and later revolutionized dance in the West. Co-founder and artistic director of the New York City Ballet for nearly 35 years, Balanchine developed a neoclassical style in which dance no longer tells a story but interprets the music itself.
“Watch the music, listen to the dance” is the phrase that best sums up his artistic philosophy. Throughout his career, he collaborated with composers such as Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, Ravel and Bizet and created choreographies that have become world landmarks, including “Serenade”, “Apollo”, “Jewels” or “Theme and Variations”.
His style is defined by speed, musicality and absolute clarity of lines. Unlike classical narrative ballet, Balanchine freed dance from story and setting, focusing on the essence of movement. In his creations, music becomes the engine of every step, and the ballerina becomes the center of gravity of the performance, strong and independent. The result is a modern, luminous ballet in which emotion is conveyed exclusively through movement.
