The Border Police buys the most modern car monitoring and identification system.
The General Inspectorate of the Border Police launched the tender for the most modern license plate identification system for cars entering and leaving Romania day and night, in the south and west.
Video cameras will be able to identify license plates even at night and will be connected to European databases. Thus alerts will be issued in cases of theft or illegal trafficking and migration.
The video systems will be connected to national and international databases and will show almost instantly all the information related to the car and its owners.
“The system allows the recognition of registration numbers and when it detects an alert, it is automatically sent to our colleagues who take the necessary legal measures”, claims sdeputy commissioner Lurentiu David, from the General Inspectorate of the Border Police.
In 2024 alone, border guards discovered nearly 200 cars that had been reported stolen in other states.
One of them, worth 40,000 euros, was allegedly stolen from Italy last month, and the police requested that the Romanian border agents confiscate it. The driver who was driving the car at the border crossing point in Turnu, Arad, is now being investigated for concealment.
Modernization is a mandatory criterion for full accession to the Schengen Area and will compensate for the elimination of physical control at the internal border.
