Chatgpt, the first lawyer consulted by Romanians. Artificial intelligence changes the rules of legal game

Romanians become more and more confident in their own legal abilities, and some of them solve their own legal problems, inspiring themselves from online sources or using artificial intelligence platforms. A recent study shows that 8 out of 10 Romanians assume, in one form or another, the role of lawyer. The phenomenon does not surprise the lawyer Ruxandra Vișoiu, who says that artificial intelligence radically changes how people relate to professionals in the field.

“I am not surprised that the study showed that 8 out of 10 Romanians assume the role of lawyer, especially since the AI is increasingly present and used by everyone. To give only a few examples, if you ask them a question in the specific legal field, it could give you an answer. Or, better, there are some platforms as a legal time. And for students. explains the lawyer.

Customers come to lawyer after checking with Chatgpt first

More and more Romanians are resorting to AI platforms before reaching a lawyer’s office. “I must admit that many of the customers who come to us, if not most, do their own research. So assume the role of lawy says Ruxandra Vișoiu.

“For example, people even say that the Chatgpt’s office was recommended. That means they initially researched the subject and asked questions as you can get Romanian citizenship? And Chatgpt gave them answers by citing various law sites and online resources. Often there are correct information, but sometimes they are wrong.”says the lawyer.

She offers a concrete example: “I had a client who was convinced that he did not have to know the Romanian language to obtain citizenship, although he wanted to deposit on the basis of his grandfather. In reality, when it comes to a descending citizenship, you must know the Romanian language. The law was amended in the spring of 2025, and I had to disappoint him.”

AI, also used for simple but not without risk

More and more Romanians are trying to write their own requests or complaints, inspiring from the Internet. “We have heard people who use or even other resources on the Internet-for example, blogs-to make their own applications. positive. ”

According to Ruxandrei Vișoiu, there are also cases where citizens can manage a minor procedure alone: “If the stake is not very large, such as a dispute with the owners’ association for several hundred lei, it is logical that you do not want to pay a lawyer several thousand euros. You can write your preliminary complaint and even the request to sue, if you have time and resources to do it.”

From forums to AI platforms

“I noticed that the population looking for information on sites like lawyer.net has now moved on the AI platforms. They group the information much better and can give even correct answers. But there are areas where you can not be your own lawyer or professional legal.”emphasizes Vișoiu.

It offers the example of real estate transactions: “If you want to buy or sell a land, you must go to the notary. Even if you can make a contract draft using the AI, it is not enough. You need the notary’s paraphrase on that act.”

AI, an instrument for lawyers, not a threat

Although the technology transforms the profession, Ruxandra Vișoiu believes that lawyers should not see it as a threat. “On the law side, including the drafting of contracts, the AI will be more useful. Maybe an entrepreneur at the beginning of the road does not have money for a lawyer and uses a contract model generated by AI-and can even be a good one. Even we distributed on our site models of contracts that were used by customers,” she says.

“You, as a lawyer, you have to show that you will bring value. In our activity ”, concludes the lawyer Ruxandra Vișoiu.

According to the study “Trust and Technology: Market analysis for legal documents verification platforms”, Made by the MKOR Agency at the initiative of the IMMosafi startup, Romanians are constantly facing legal documents, but prefer to check them alone. 78% of the respondents had to analyze at least one legal document in the last year, and 77% did it without specialized help, based exclusively on their own knowledge.

On average, a person checks 6-7 documents annually, and over a quarter does it monthly. However, only 9% call for a lawyer, 11% to a notary, and 8% to an accountant, which outlines a market still not covered by accessible legal services.

“The Romanians juggle with a multitude of contracts, but hesitate to seek specialized help, either because of costs or lack of time. Here technology intervenes. Legal-tech solutions that combine accessibility with trust can make a differenceA ”, explains Cori Cimpoca, the founder of Mkor.

Research also shows an increasing opening to automatic solutions: 60% of participants consider a legal analysis based on “very useful” AI, especially due to rapidity, accessibility 24/7 and clarity in explaining the risk and contractual clauses. However, 40% of Romanians remain reluctant to load confidential documents online, invoking fears about data security.
