How a banana taped to a wall ended up being auctioned for $1 million

Maurizio Cattelan’s controversial ‘Comedian’ artwork, which consists of a banana taped to a wall, could fetch more than $1 million at auction, with an expert saying “the public will decide its true value”.

The work divided art fans and critics when it debuted at the Art Basel art fair in Miami Beach (Florida) in 2019, and has since been eaten twice, once as part of the performance.“Hungry Artist” and then by a hungry student, who stuck the shell back on the wall, writes Agerpres.

It is estimated that the work could fetch between $1 million and $1.5 million when it goes up for sale at auction. “The Now and Contemporary Evening Auction”, organized by Sotheby’s in New York on November 20.

Before the auction, “Comedian” will embark on a world tour, starting with an exhibition in New York on October 28, and then going to London, Paris, Milan, Hong Kong, Dubai, Taipei, Tokyo and Los Angeles.

The work will return to New York between November 8 and 20, before being put up for auction.
