The independent candidate for the Presidency of Romania, Mircea Geoană, conveyed on Friday, during the Trilateral Economic Forum in Iasi, that Europe is in a period of major changes, comparable in impact to the events after the fall of communism. He described the current global situation as “a complex and dangerous moment” which will define the evolution of Europe for the next decades: “We are experiencing a second great geopolitical earthquake, after the fall of communism 35 years ago,” pointed out Geoană, adding that the effects of this transformation will be deeply felt in the countries of Eastern Europe.
Geoană noted that, with the war in Ukraine, Europe’s strategic attention is moving to the east, including to Romania and the Republic of Moldova. “Chancellor Scholz had, at the beginning of this odious war of the Russian Federation on Ukraine, a common sense strategic observation: the center of gravity of Europe is moving to the east. Right here where we are,” he declared, emphasizing the role of the region in the new European order, with Iași strategically positioned as a possible center of economic development.
During the forum, Geoană encouraged the more active involvement of the business environment from Romania, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine in the reconstruction of the region and suggested the organization of an international conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine in Romania in 2026. “We must aim to host the reconstruction conference of the entire democratic West in Romania 2026,” he said, suggesting that Romania needs to take a more proactive role in this process.
Geoană also had a message for young politicians, urging them to be more ambitious: “There are young politicians here and I have a request for them, let’s try to play in another league, not wait for someone else to give us something that falls from the guests’ table.“
Referring to the European integration of the Republic of Moldova, Geoană stated that “the stake of the European integration of the Republic of Moldova is greater than the size or the strategic relevance of this small country,” stressing that the support from Romania and Europe is essential for achieving this objective.
