Romanians are starting to make their plans for the end of the year, and for those who didn’t know, in 2025 Christmas will fall on a Thursday, and the next day, December 26, on a Friday. This means that employees will have a four-day break between December 25 and 28, with no need for additional leave.

After a busy year, the end of 2025 offers perhaps the clearest opportunity for a reset: two long weekends, tied to the most anticipated winter holidays.
The month of December brings three non-working days established by the Labor Code:
- December 1 (National Day of Romania) – falls on a Monday, already offering a first three-day weekend.
- December 25th and 26th (Christmas and Boxing Day) – Thursday and Friday, leading to a free slot between December 25th and 28th.
New Year’s Eve and the beginning of 2026
The free streak continues right into the first week of the new year. January 1 and 2, 2026, New Year’s Day, also fall on Thursdays and Fridays, so employees will start the year with a new four-day weekend.
Moreover, in 2026, January 6 (Baptism) and January 7 (Saint John the Baptist) are public holidays, which means that the first week of January can become an eight-day mini-vacation for those who plan their vacation effectively.
How employees can organize their free time
For those who want a longer break at the end of the year, the most advantageous combination is:
- Holiday on December 24 (Wednesday), followed by Christmas holidays;
- Then additional leave, taken by employees on December 29–31, to link the New Year holidays; The result: a free period of almost two weeks between December 24th and January 5th.
In total, the end of the year and the beginning of 2026 can bring up to ten consecutive days off for those who plan their schedule ahead of time.
