Surprise of proportions for the students of the University of Timișoara, who were received in luxury dormitory rooms. This, while the students of the University of Craiova did not even get a place to stay on campus.

A student dormitory belonging to the Western University of Timișoara became viral on TikTok, after it was renovated, and the accommodation conditions compete with those of a luxury hotel. It is about the C16 dormitory which, the students say, offered extremely bad accommodation conditions. Now the building is unrecognizable.
Three years and 11 million lei. That’s how long it took and how much it cost to renovate the C16 dormitory, which over time has left generations of students with some of the most unpleasant memories. “When I stayed in C15 and C16 and turned on the light bulb in the evening, the cockroaches would run under the beds. I don’t say anything in the showers anymore”a former student commented on the images. “And when I think that I waited 3 months with an average of 9 to get a place in a dorm with cockroaches… (2016 UVT)”, added another.
In the video posted by a student on the social network, it can be seen that the doors, flooring, furniture and refrigerator are new, and the bathrooms and kitchens have been modernized. The video has garnered thousands of likes, comments and shares.
“Luxury, brother, compared to the state-run hostels in other counties”.
“How cool it looks. Refrigerator and others. When I was in the dormitory, I didn’t have such conditions”.
“Shocking. I’m glad they did something nice after so many years of jeg”
Is this C16??? I lived there 9 years ago, the 3rd floor, it was like hell…Absolutely SHOCKING!”
“Wow. When I was in college, C16 was known for its unbelievably miserable conditions. I’m glad it was renovated and other generations can make a decent living and have a better quality of dorm life.” these are just some of the reactions from former and current students.
Internet users were amazed not only by the conditions offered, but also by the fees to be paid – 330 lei per month. “In Brașov it is 480 lei and the conditions are much lower”. “My god what a piece of furniture…it looks insane..I’d move to the dorm again” the young people also comment.
Dormitories from Craiova, archipelago. More than 500 students, on the waiting list
However, students from the other corner of the country are not so lucky. It is, more precisely, about the students of the University of Craiova, many of whom will not stay in the dormitory at all this year. The reason? Not everyone managed to get a place to stay in the campus dormitories. There are already lists of hundreds of people waiting for a “miracle”. “So, I think 140 students are left outside, without a place in the dormitory for now,” said Magdalena Mihai, Vice Chancellor of the University of Craiova.
This is why students will have to make do as they can until the waiting lists are released. “We also have the second session for submitting accommodation requests, which ended on September 23. I think we still have around 500 requests that we will honor, partially obviously, after October 1“, the vice-chancellor of the University of Craiova also stated.
How to get a place in the dormitory
The procedure for obtaining a place in the dormitory begins by filling in an application accompanied by two photographs. The accommodation file must also contain copies of the bulletin and, as the case may be, xeroxes of the documents that prove the special social situation. The file then goes before an accommodation committee, made up of teachers and student representatives. The commission will analyze the file and distribute the places, within the limits of those available. The criteria taken into account are the year of study, continuity in the dormitory, serious social situations, children of teaching staff, etc. Scholars and high scorers also have a better chance of getting a good place in the dorm.
“The tie-breaking criterion is the academic one. Some faculties adopt average-level grading for first-year students, and others use credit points for other students in older years.” Sergiu Covaci, president of the National Alliance of Student Organizations from Romania, told Adevărul.
“Each faculty allocates 15-20% of the places received for social and medical cases: students from single-parent families or orphans are given priority. As for averages, we are talking about those with which the graduates of the 12th grades finish the Baccalaureate, but also the averages from the entrance exam. Many faculties organize entrance exams such as Law, Mathematics and Computer Science, etc.said Sergiu, who is in the first year of his master’s degree in Bucharest.
The University of Craiova has 9 dormitories in four campuses and a canteen. The monthly rent is between 295 lei and 500 lei, depending on the degree of comfort of the dormitory, and the allocation of rooms is done exclusively online.
