In the May 1st mini-holiday, the differences in experience are less about distance and more about the choice of area. While established resorts are quickly becoming overcrowded and more expensive, there are still regions in Romania where costs remain moderate and the pace is one of real relaxation.
Tourism experts have compiled a ranking of the most suitable destinations, ordered from the most accessible to the most expensive, with indicative budgets for 2 people and 2–3 nights. The budget for each area only includes accommodation, transport and basic meals, especially in local food establishments.
The ranking shows a clear transition from accessible and easy-to-organize destinations, such as Țara Hațegului and Băile Felix, to areas with more complex experiences and higher costs, such as Maramureș and the Danube Delta. Apusenii and Bucovina remain in the balance zone, offering the best ratio between nature, costs and lack of crowding.
1. țara Hațegului – the most affordable option
Budget: 700 – 1,200 lei / 2 people
Șara Hațegului is one of the most balanced options for a quieter 1, with access to nature and historical sights, but without the pressure of mass tourism. The Hațeg – Sarmizegetusa – Retezat periphery area is known for its slow pace and for the fact that it maintains discreet tourism. Here you can visit Sarmizegetusa Ulpia Traiana, one of the most important Roman sites in Romania, as well as the stone churches in the area or the reservation of dwarf dinosaurs in the Dinosaur Geopark. Nearby is the Retezat National Park, with access to easy trails to the edge areas of the massif.
2. Băile Felix / Băile 1 Mai – affordable spa relaxation
Budget: 800 – 1,200 lei / 2 people
Baile Felix remains a classic destination for relaxation, easily accessible including by train, but livelier during peak periods. It is an area built around thermal waters, with good infrastructure and constant services. Here you can use the indoor and outdoor thermal pools, you can visit the lake with thermal water lilies or Aquapark President, and the proximity to Oradea adds a cultural plus, the city being one of the best preserved baroque centers in Romania.
3. Apuseni Mountains (Rimetea, Garda de Sus, Arieseni) – nature and moderate isolation
Budget: 1,100 – 1,800 lei / 2 people
The sunsets are one of the best choices for those who want nature and peace, but without the extreme isolation of other mountain areas. Spread geographically, these mountains automatically reduce tourist congestion. In the area you can visit the Cheile Turzii, one of the most spectacular karst formations in the country, the Scarișoara Cave, where one of the largest underground glaciers in Europe is located, the village of Rimetea, recognized for its well-preserved traditional architecture, but also waterfalls and easy mountain trails in the Arieseni area.
Holiday destinations to avoid in 2026. Where not to travel
4. Bucovina (Vatra Moldoviței, Campulung Moldovenesc) – culture and rural landscape
Budget: 1,100 – 1,900 lei / 2 people
Bucovina combines cultural and natural tourism in a balanced way, and the fact that the objectives are dispersed reduces the pressure of agglomeration. It is a region known especially for the painted monasteries, such as Voroneț, Moldovița and Sucevița, but also for the mountain landscapes in the area of Rărau and Pietrele Doamnei. In addition, the mountain roads and traditional villages offer an authentic rural experience, different from the commercial tourist areas.
5. Rural Maramureș (Breb, Ieud, Săpânta) – authenticity and tradition
Budget: 1,300 – 2,200 lei / 2 people
Maramureș is one of the most authentic regions of Romania, with tourism based on traditions and cultural heritage. It’s more expensive and more remote, but offers a completely different experience. Among the main attractions are the Vesel Cemetery in Săpânta, the wooden churches included in the UNESCO heritage, the village of Breb, known for its traditional architecture that is still preserved, and Mocănița on Valea Vaserului, one of the last functional forest railways in Europe.
6. Danube Delta (Sfântu Gheorghe, Crișan, Mila 23) – isolation and unique ecosystem
Budget: 1,500 – 2,700 lei / 2 people
The Danube Delta is the most isolated and special destination in the ranking, with exclusive combined road and naval access. It is an area where the tourist infrastructure is intentionally limited by the natural specificity, which preserves a high level of authenticity. Here the experience is dominated by navigable canals, boat routes, the wild beach at Sfântu Gheorghe, the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve and bird watching, with species such as pelicans or egrets.
